Michael Pineda for the New York Yankees has been suspended for 10 whole games after using pine tar in his last game against the Boston Redsox. This should be an embarrassing time for the Yankees organization.
This is not the first time Pineda has been accused of using pine tar this year. Once, against the Redsox also, he was accused of having it on his hand but he insisted that it was dirt. Now, it is much more obvious that it was most likely not just “dirt” and that he also used pine tar in that game. Pine tar is illegal to use while pitching in any age of baseball. It helps the pitcher get a better grip on the ball and could potentially add a few miles per hour to their pitches if they have a better grip. Pitchers are given a rosin bag which is on the back of the mound which they are allowed to use at any point in the game for extra grip. Pine tar is much more sticky and will allow someone to have a lot better grip on the ball.
Now, why would Pineda use pine tar in 2 games in a row against the Redsox? He was accused of it in the game before but wasn’t thrown out. Now, in his second appearance, the Boston Redsox manager came out to the home plate umpire in the second inning and asked the umpire to see if Pineda was using pine tar or anything he wasn’t supposed to be. The umpire walked up to the mound along with the rest of the Yankees infield and told Pineda to take off his glove and to let the umpire see his hands. Pineda showed the home plate umpire his hands and it was obvious nothing was on there. The umpire was not done looking though. He make Pineda turn around and he still did not find anything unusual. Then, the umpire reached for Pineda’s neck and felt the pine tar. It was at that time that Pineda was then ejected from the game and is now suspended for 10 more.
Pineda is still getting paid during this suspension and let’s hope he doesn’t use pine tar again while he is pitching. If he does, maybe he will hide it in a better spot than on his neck where it was very noticeable. I think he should be suspended for more than 10 games or at least not get paid while he is suspended.
