X-Men Days of Future Past have proved to be the best X-Men film yet. The film drew from the classic Days of Future Past story arc from X-Men #141 and #142. The film did not follow the story exactly and changed some of the details of the story. One of the details left out of the story was a minor character with major importance: Rachael Summers.
Rachael Summers is the daughter of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey. Rachael is the one who sends Kate Pryde back in time to stop the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly. The mainstream reality was changed but the future of Kate Pryde and Rachael Summers was not and all of the X-Men were killed in a failed assault on the Sentinels. Kate devises another plan to set their reality right and Rachel taps the Phoenix Force and travels back in time again to stop the chain of events that causes the rise of the Sentinels. Rachael later becomes a member of the X-Men and takes the codename Phoenix.
Rachael Summers comes to the mainstream time from an alternate future where the Sentinels were not stopped and are destroying the world. Rachael arrives in the mainstream time line and is shocked to find events of the current reality not matching her own. One key change is the fact that her father and mother are not married and have no children.
Powers and Abilities
Telepathy gives Summers the ability to read minds, and plant thoughts into the minds of others. One of the more devastating attacks that Rachael possesses is a psionic bolt. She can cast a bolt of pure psionic energy and overwhelm the mind of the target. The attack renders the target unconscious.
Telekinesis is the ability to move objects with the power of the mind. Rachel possesses this power to an incredible degree. Rachel could levitate matter and even give herself the ability to fly at amazing speeds.
Rachel had the ability to telepathically link consciousness across time. She could send the consciousness of a person back in time to their younger self. The ability proved to save many lives. It is Rachel who sends Kate Pryde back in time in Days of Future Past.
After tapping into the Phoenix Force, Rachel’s mental powers are magnified to an extreme level. She could manipulate both time and space. Rachael was one of the most powerful mutants in the X-Men and was able to control the Phoenix Force to her maximum benefit. Rachel would eventually lose the Phoenix Force and took on the name Marvel Girl. This was the original codename for her mother Jean Grey.
The end of Days of Future Past restores the timeline and stops the development of the Sentinels. Another issue with the change is that those who died in X-Men: The Last Stand are alive again. This means that Scott Summers and Jean Grey are alive and can have a child named Rachael. There are a number of ways that Rachael Summers could be incorporated into future stories and could be a potential replacement for the character Jean Grey.
