When you talk about North Korea, skiing over snow clad mountains is not at all first thing that pops up in our mind. North Korea is an isolated nation with lot of controversy about it floating on the media. The threats it has made towards Southern partner and USA and the atrocities of the regime towards its people has made North Korea to be one of the most hated countries. But, not all is bad over there!
You barely see any athletes from North Korea in international games, but they do have one of the finest skiing resorts in the world. The ski resort is located in the Kangwon province and was inaugurated on January 1 after several setbacks. In order to reach this place, one has to cross the Masik Pass, which was previously difficult for foreigners. There are many English speaking Koreans to assist you, but the actual ski guides do not speak English at all.
It is rather interesting to analyze the opening of the new ski resort in North Korea. Back in 1988, North Korea wanted to hold the winter Olympics for which they were denied and eventually the games were held in South Korea. Same thing happened this time when the Olympic committee decided to let North Korea host the games in Masik, but Seoul was later chosen to be the venue for 2018. With quite a disappointment, the authorities have decided that Masik would be used as a training center for skiing.
North Korea has never won any medals in skiing and did not send its athletes to Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. With the next game after four years from now, could North Korea be preparing to rock the show in the South?
The newest ski resort has all the equipment required for going from a beginner to advanced. Statistics show that only 0.02 percent of North Koreans have ever skied. The North Korean media has also been repeatedly publishing content related to Sochi Olympics which has created an interest in the North Koreans. Many people have begun to visit the resort in groups and most of them ski without any sort of guidance from experts.
The resort has around 250 rooms spread over 8 floors and are built by keeping foreigners in mind. A 150 room hotel is also built which is meant for Koreans. The location also has deluxe swimming pool, helipad for VIPs, underground parking and all the 5 star features.
The cost of using the ski slope is about 27 dollars for a foreigner which is just as step at copper mountain lift tickets price with Koreans in mind. A nights’ stay at the hotel would cost a foreigner about 100 dollars, which is extremely steep for Koreans.
Through such projects, it can be seen that the regime is taking measures to improve the standard of living for the Korean people which apparently is the lowest in the world. With such projects in a country like North Korea comes criticism from the world about it sucking all the resources to build projects like these while depriving the citizens from basic amenities.
