You may be surprised to read that I have had many people come to me and ask me questions relating to critiques, bad reviews, and how you handle those.
I remember the first day that I was told from an editor at a company I worked for that my writing sucked. The editor was not professional about his or her opinion at all. (Writers were not allowed to know the identity of the editors.)
I felt like quitting. I felt like giving up. I was devastated. I shed tears – real tears. I didn’t know what to do from that point on. I knew that I needed to keep working, and I knew that my family was relying on my to keep a roof over their heads, food in their bellies, and gas in the car.
Then it dawned on me! I have been working as a writer (at this time) for a few years and I had hundreds of articles posted online and published.
I spoke with a few friends of mine that were writers, and I let it out. I finally decided that I had to grow thick skin. And so do you!
If you want to write online and make money it is not a matter of if someone will not like your work, it is a matter of when!
It happens to us all! You can wear your heart on your sleeve in your daily life, but not in your writing career. Think about it for a minute, even famous authors have critiques. No matter what you do, you will have bad reviews. But…. you can not let those stop you!
Remember you are working from home because you want to. You are writing in a very competitive field. You will have a lot of fans, but you will also have a few people that completely think you are horrible. smile at them and keep on going!
You have put yourself out there for the entire world to see. You are on the world-wide web! You are making a name for yourself. Your naysayers don’t matter, Honestly! They don’t!
Grow thick skin! You are not writing because you want everyone around the world to like you. You are not writing because you want to be the next up-and-coming famous author (Okay, maybe you are secretly wishing for that to happen…) you are writing because you want to! Period!
When you find that someone does not like your work, let it roll off your back. You can’t please everyone!
