As a jewelry designer of over 10 years, one of my favorite things to do is shop for new colors. Working with color is a trademark of my designs, and most artists I know love color matching. When you create jewelry, your materials are like an artist’s paint set. Which is why I get so excited when I come across brand new colors, or colors that show up in unexpected seasons. Spring has sprung, and for most jewelry designers that means pastels and floral prints. But this season Swarovski released Crystal Blackberry Pearl, a new color of crystal pearl, and I can’t praise it enough.
A Touch of Winter
One of the things I absolutely love about this color is the fact that it’s an unexpected color release for Spring. Most of the time, plant colors and pastels are released during this season, like “Sunflower” of 2013. But this season it’s a gorgeous, deep blackberry mauve that has the eye of designers everywhere. The look reminds me of a deep, red wine and has a distinctly fall and winter feel to it. But bringing a touch of winter into spring and summer designs is unexpected, and will likely generate a lot of interest in your pieces.
Size and Shape Variety
The other quality I love about these beads is the size variety. From 3mm rounds to 14mm baroques, there are a number of different sizes and shapes from which to choose. If you’re looking for a more natural, freshwater pearl look the baroque shape is perfect. It more accurately represents the asymmetrical shape of natural freshwater pearls, and carries the color well, also. Combined with shells and/or seed beads they would create a delightfully unique oceanic creation. For a more polished and uniformed look, choose the round beads; rounds are perfect for wedding jewelry and similar projects.
String it Or Wire it – There are Holes For Each
One of the most frustrating things that happens to me as a jewelry designer is when I have an assortment of beads set aside for a project only to find that the string or wire I’ve chosen to use won’t fit through the holes in one of my bead choices. The other side of the same problem is when the holes are too large and my beads fly all over the place. Fortunately, the new Crystal Blackberry Pearl Swarovski crystal pearls have hole sizes from 0.80mm to 1.30mm, allowing you to include them in a wide variety of projects.
This stunning new color is absolutely fantastic, and I can’t wait to use it in a variety of projects for summer. In fact, I might stock up on it and save some of it for fall and winter, as well. The 3mm rounds come in packages of 100 for just over $4, and at the higher end the 14mm baroques come in packages of 10 for just over $8. However, if you shop with Fire Mountain Gems, which I highly recommend, the more items you order the lower your unit price for each is. I’ve been using FMG for years and have saved hundreds using their mix and match bundle pricing. I hope you have a fantastic time mixing this new color into your spring and summer creations. Try mixing it with peridot, sand, or even light rose pink for unique color combinations that are sure to please.
