Scroll down through the comments section of a celebrity blog or forum and more often that not you’ll find it filled with countless hateful messages. People insulting celebrities, calling them names, and worse, insulting each other.
It seems as though pop culture has become somewhat of a vicious game. We love to raise them up, but we also enjoy tearing them down, delighting in their fall.
Take, for example, Kim Kardashian. She was not always the celebrity everyone loved to hate (believe it or not). Over the years, however, she has become the epitome of the hated celebrity. The comments section of blogs or articles written about her are full of derogatory name calling and awful insults directed towards her or her family. And when I say awful, I really mean it. Each time I read these comments I am astonished by how cruel and hateful people can be. Some people write things I don’t think they would ever dare say out loud.
Nonetheless, reading these comments has also always made me laugh. Have people forgotten that none of us are perfect? That we all have flaws, we’ve all done things we regret, and none of us are without wrongdoing? Haven’t they ever heard that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones?
What baffles me the most, however, is the sheer hypocrisy of it all. What makes these people think that they’re any better than the very people they’re insulting, when they say such awful things?
Nothing, nothing at all. The truth is that these people are just as bad, if not worse. They are not only hurting others, but they’re hurting themselves. What does writing vicious, cruel things about others say about your own character? In my opinion it says a lot, and none of it is good.
I’m not trying to sound all high and mighty. We’re all guilty of it, including myself. I admit it. And I’m also not trying to defend these celebrities, or say that they’re not the things people say there are. Because yes, unfortunately many of them are. But I’m really talking about everyone here, not just those who are in the public eye; no one under any circumstances should be subject to hate online.
Lastly, I want to make it clear that I’m not trying to condemn anyone. Instead, I’m just asking that the next time you want to spread hate on the internet, whether it is directed towards a celebrity or another user expressing their opinions, you think before you act. Remember that what you write about others and how you treat them defines your character and the kind of person you are. When you hurt others you are hurting yourself too. So rise above and be better.
