Everybody loves one type of condiment or another. Many of us use them on anything from hotdogs to salads, but let’s see which ones are healthy and which ones are keeping you from getting rid of that belly. First, condiments are considered a food, not just a sauce or liquid that we smother things in. Some condiments are packed with calories and saturated fats, and others are low-calorie and fat free.
THE GOOD. 1. Vinegars are a very healthy alternative to put on salads and sandwiches in place of those creamy fatty dressings. 2. Mustard is also a low-calorie condiment that many people have substituted into their diet and successfully lost weight. 3. Salsa is my personal favorite to substitute as a condiment or a low-calorie snack. The average ¼ cup of salsa is only 30 calories, but make sure to pick the store bought salsa that doesn’t have high sodium content. 4. Hot sauce is another quick fix that people use to give things a little heat and zing to keep the day interesting. 1/2 teaspoon of hot sauce is less than 1 calorie, which makes it a low-calorie alternative, but remember that some people may be very sensitive to spicy foods and can have strong stomach pains after eating them.
THE BAD. 1. Although soy sauce is also packed with flavor and has very few calories, even the low-sodium products still have high amounts of sodium and can be very harmful. 2. Mayonnaise is every sandwiches favorite friend, but unfortunately your body thinks it is evil! Mayonnaise contains a very high amount of fat and saturated fat and should be used in very small amounts if consumed at all. 3. Ranch dressing is America’s favorite dip and salad dressing. Some companies offer low-calorie Ranch that doesn’t taste great and still isn’t very healthy. Ranch is based from the same ingredients as mayonnaise and sour cream, which makes it a very high calorie condiment that should not be eaten if you ever want to lose weight. 4. Many people wouldn’t think that the little bit of jam or jelly they eat does them any harm, but it can. Jelly preservatives contain very high amounts of sugar and without proper diet and exercise; it will turn into fat very quickly.
This is by no means an extensive list of condiments, but these are a couple of the best and worst that people often wouldn’t think about. Whenever you are making a sandwich, salad, or any kind of snack, remember that your body will thank you later for choosing the healthy ones.
