What is D2 and D3?
It is widely known that you can purchase Vitamin D3 over the counter and can absorb it from the sun, but did you know that Vitamin D2 is actually a hormone? It is synthesized by our bodies, from sun’s rays or consumed by some of the foods we eat?
By exposing our skin for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, at least three times a week, we can soak up what we need to sustain the level we require. We can also supplement this by eating fish, eggs, butter, mushrooms and sunflower seeds. As we absorb the vitamin or hormone, our bodies will store it in our fat cells till it is needed. It can do this because it is fat soluble, so therefore it is better when taken with fatty foods.
Not only does Vitamin D help our teeth and bones, but it is needed for the immune system, heart and neurological conditions. Scientists have associated it with patients who have low levels, are at higher risk of MS relapses, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and many more. Research shows higher levels can help with these diseases at the early on set and should be part of their standard care.
Call your doctor about Vitamin D levels if you have bone pains, muscle weakness, heart issues, cancer, neurological diseases, milk allergies, diabetes, hypertension, glucose problems, homebound or are a serious vegetarian. Consuming Vitamin D can boost you energy and help you live a healthier life.
No one is the same, so please contact your doctor about the amount consumed and monitor your levels. Vitamin D3 toxicity is rare but can be treated, usually, by decreasing intake but it is not caused by natural intake because our bodies regulate the amounts naturally.
Causes of Deficiency
Lack of sunlight due to being inside, keeping the skin and head covered and, yes, even wearing sun block. The rays are being blocked from reaching our skin.
As we get older it is harder for the digestive tract to absorb, like in cases of Crohn’s and cystic fibrosis. Darker skin makes it harder for the rays to connect because the pigment melanin reduces production.
Those who are vegetarian, obese or with milk allergies should get checked because these greatly reduce the vitamin extract as well.
