This year, the world will witness 32 teams from different nationalities battle for the football world cup. These matches will be staged in Brazil from the 12th of June to the 13th of July. Four years ago, I had one of my most memorable experiences after flying to South Africa to watch the world cup. This is my story.
The process of obtaining the tickets is easy. You either link to the travel agents or obtain the tickets online. Those who arrive early enough in the host countries can obtain the tickets within the country. I personally used travel agents who apart from giving you a list of matches, when they will play and in which stadiums, they will also place you in the most apt hotels. Travel agents are the best resource to get your tickets.
I remember when I arrived at the airport in South Africa, I felt very odd because I was the only one not donning my national teams jersey. The airport was full of people in different jersey most probably depicting their nations or preferred teams. This was my first time, I had never witnessed majority of events and styles that go hand in hand with the world cup. I had to ask my taxi driver to take me to any shop that I could purchase a US jersey. He took me to a shopping mall in the central business district where I bought it, which was much more expensive than the normal days because of demand.
One of the most amazing days during this time was when I went to watch the US national team. I had traveled alone for the world cup but left the stadium with more than 100 friends of US nationality. We were all packed on the same stand in the stadium. We cheered ecstatically, blowing “vuvuzelas’ as we sang the songs of victory’s. Vuvuzelas were horn like structure blown to produce huge sounds. I actually remember pretty well then, the game was against England. The Mexican wave which actually involves everyone in the stadium is one of the most activities to experience inside the stadium. Although we got a draw in the match, the supporters of the US team were so happy, we had been ruled out! England was the better team; the draw was equal to a win! After the match, we all went to one of the nearest bars adjacent to the stadium and tossed some champagne. I was then able to make a lot of friends whom I still see them today.
Attending the world cup is a memorable experience. I will miss this year’s world cup as a result of bad health. Nevertheless, I would urge those who have the means and time not to overlook such an exciting experience.
