Steve Perry was the lead singer for Journey for many years. Journey now has a different lead singer but what happened to Perry? Here’s what happened to Steve Perry.
Steve Perry and Journey.
First off let’s talk about Steve Perry and his relationship with Journey. Perry was with Journey from 1977-1986. During this time he led the band as the lead singer. They produced many popular hits, such as “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Faithfully”. In 1986 Perry decided to go solo thus halting Journey as a band for then. I remember growing up and hearing Journey music because my parents often played their music. I was too young to have heard them when they first came out but that era of music still lived long afterwards. I think the renewed success of Journey came from the various TV shows over the years that have showcased their music. In particular, the song “Don’t Stop Believing” was infamously featured in the series finale of HBO’s The Sopranos, as well as predominantly bringing the show Glee to everyone’s attention. Their music become popular again but the same fact remained and that was the fact that Steve Perry was still not apart of the band anymore.
Perry found success with “Oh Sherrie” in 1984. He released this song on a solo album while he was still technically with the band but soon decided that he could go solo full time thus leaving the band. While he didn’t achieve the same success solo as he did with Journey he did record a couple of songs for the movie Quest for Camelot. I was somewhat familiar with his music as I was around 8 years old when this movie came out. I think this was a great idea from a marketing standpoint because it introduced Perry’s sound to a new younger audience which were more than likely the children of fans of Journey.
What Steve Perry is currently doing.
As I stated before Journey’s music has found a renewed success thanks to various TV shows using their music. Financially this has been great for Perry since he still can receive royalties on these old recordings. When I hear Journey being played on the radio to this day I hear Steve Perry’s version and not the new singer’s version. This again shows how much of an impact Perry made with Journey those many years ago. For now Perry has done a great job of staying out of the spotlight. In 2012 Perry was interviewed by Billboard where he said that he’s built a recording studio in his home but wants to record and produce music at his own pace. It’s been over two years since that interview and we haven’t heard any music from him yet. I assume he’s just enjoying life and taking things slow. I think he’ll release music, if he decides to, at his own pace, when he’s ready to, and not worry about what any record label or media has to say about it.
