No one knows disappointment more than fans of the NFL franchise Detroit Lions. They are considered one of the worst franchises in sports history. Matt Millen, who was the General Manager of the organization for years, is considered to be, without a doubt, the worst General Manager in the history of sports. The team hasn’t won a championship since 1957 and have only been in the playoffs nine times since that 1957 championship season.
But, through all the hurt and pain, Lions fans continue to love their hometown team. They continue to support their team and they continue to endure heartbreak year after year.
So, after reading that, I know you’re wondering what the hell can the Detroit Lions teach you about internet entrepreneuship?
There is no denying that when you start off as an internet entrepreneur, you will have good days and you will have bad days. There will be days where you’re floating on cloud nine and everything is working for you. Then there are those days when your Mom won’t even support you.
When you’re starting out, Mom won’t be supporting you. Internet MARKETING is one of the hardest things to do. Just like marketing in the physical world takes work, internet marketing is that much harder.
Nobody will click on your affiliate links.
You can’t make more than $0.10 a day on Adsense.
It’s frustrating. I know. I can relate to both. But certain things have to happen for things to turn around:
1. Change your mind
By change your mind, I mean change your mindset. If you need help with that, become a part of a mastermind and interact with them often. I find nothing better than talking with like-minded entrepreneurs. They will really get the juices flowing. Being around other people who are going through the same things you are going through is a welcomed change. Remember, you can’t be a successful (fill-in-the-blank) by yourself! The Lions had to change their coach and front office before the culture can change. Also, it takes time. It starts at the top.
2. Don’t be afraid to stop doing what doesn’t work
If the Lions had fired Millen a couple years before they did, they may not have ever seen the NFL’s only winless season. They should have cut their loses when long ago. Just because you started out doing something doesn’t mean you have to continue to do it until you get results. If the affiliate links you’re using aren’t converting, change them and find ones that will start converting for you. Sometimes it’s best to cut your losses before you lose anymore.
3. You Need to Spend Money to Win
The Lions never had a real superstar player until they drafted Barry Sanders in 1989. They didn’t really win after getting Barry, but they were definitely more entertaining to watch. You can do a little damage in the beginning by using a lot of the free tools available like the Google Keyword Tool and Google Docs, but you will also need to spend money to take your online business to the next level by using products like Market Samurai for keyword research.
It sucks to have to start from the bottom. The Detroit Lions have been rebuilding for many, many years and their fans are disappointed year after year. While you may strive for perfection, it will take time to find that sweet spot before you hit your stride in your digital empire. Like Lions fans, hang in there.
