Probiotics are microorganisms that are considered to be “beneficial bacteria” because they offer some form of health benefit. They are similar to the beneficial microorganisms naturally found in the human gut because they help fight off harmful bacteria. These friendly bacteria can treat or prevent certain ailments that can actually help prolong a person’s life.
Probiotics are usually found in fermented foods, such as yogurt, but they are also available in supplement forms, such as liquid or powder capsules. Probiotics come in various strains but the most common strains are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These live organisms can greatly benefit the human body when they are administered in adequate amounts. It may seem strange at first to take live bacteria until you see how beneficial it is to your body. The following are some health benefits of probiotics:
There are millions of good bacteria living in your intestines. They help in the normal functioning of the digestion process. Unfortunately, harmful bacteria can disrupt the normal balance of these organisms. It is believed that certain strains of probiotics, such as Lactobacillus, can actually treat certain digestive ailments, such as antibiotic-associated and infectious diarrhea, by fighting off the harmful bacteria. By fighting off the bad bacteria, it improves the functioning of the intestines and maintains the integrity of its lining.
Probiotics can provide multiple benefits to your immune system. When they are abundant in the body, it is hard for bacteria that causes illnesses to grow because probiotics suppress their growth by producing bacteriocins. They also train your immune system to distinguish between pathogens and non-harmful pathogens, and to respond appropriately. This prevents your immune system from overreacting and, as a result, prevent allergies. Not only does it prevent allergies, but it also aids in the production of antibodies to pathogens and has a powerful effect on your gut immune system and your systemic immune systemic as well.
Probiotics Could Prevent Certain Ailments
Probiotics are useful and beneficial to the body in unexpected ways. Probiotics can prevent vaginitis, bladder infections, skin allergies, premature labor, and reduce yeast infections. It is also used to treat Crohn’s Disease, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcerative colitis. A study have suggested that probiotics can also help lower cholesterol and the risk of some childhood illnesses, such as colds, strep throat, and ear infections.
Probiotics may change the way that our brain responds to the environment because it is believed to change its neurochemistry by enhancing communication between the brain and intestinal tract, and our emotional response to certain situations. This change in our brain can possibly treat emotional disorders, such as depression and other depression-related disorders.
