At a job interview, it is great to share your thoughts and opinions. However, there are some things that you shouldn’t say because it could ruin your chances of getting the job, especially, if there are so many other candidates. Most of the time, you will not get another chance once you make a mistake and say something inappropriate. Here is a list of 9 things you shouldn’t say in a job interview:
Don’t Mention Anything About the Pay
Please be sure not to mention the salary or hourly pay of the position. The interviewer could think that you want the position because of the money. Try and wait until they mention it first. Even if they mention it first, tell them that you would like to know more about your responsibilities about the job before discussing salary.
Don’t Say Anything Negative About Your Former Boss
Be sure that you say positive things about your former employer or co-workers. When you say negative comments about your former boss, they will assume that you were difficult to manage. You want them to know that you work well with others and can handle conflicts in a mature and effective way.
Don’t Say You Don’t Have a Clear Career Plan
Talk about thoroughly mastering the position of the job that you are interviewing for. Make sure you have a reasonable plan outlined that flows from the position that you are applying for.
Don’t Say That You Disliked Your Previous Job
Talk about what you learned and the skills that you gained from your previous job and why the new position is so appealing. If asked why you left the job that you had or want to leave, just say that you weren’t challenged enough and that you didn’t reach your full potential because there was no room for advancement in the company. You can also say that you feel that your skills can be better utilized somewhere else.
Be Careful Not To Say Flirtatious Comments
Be sure to not compliment the interviewers appearance in anyway because it can be interpreted as being flirtatious. Be professional at all times.
Don’t Say That You Don’t Have Any Weaknesses
Be prepared to talk about not only your strengths but also your weaknesses. Sharing a weakness that you may have always had and how you have worked to improve that weakness is an effective strategy.
Make sure you come up with a shortcoming that is not essential for success in that job.
Don’t Say You Don’t Have Any Questions
Make sure you research the company and prepare questions that you want to ask about the company. You may want to even ask additional questions about what the interviewer have already shared with you.
Don’t Be Too Overconfident or Arrogant
You want to come across as being a confident person but not cocky. For example, don’t say that you are the most qualified candidate or that they will regret if they don’t hire you. This could really turn the interviewer off.
Don’t Make It Personal
Focus more on your achievements than your personal qualities. Interviewers would rather hear your accomplishments. Make sure you talk about your past successes that are relevant to the job.
