Here’s one of my biggest weight loss secrets.
If I had to share with you, one major thing responsible for my weight loss today, I’d say, it’s walking. Walking? Really? Yep! But, this isn’t ordinary walking. It’s what I like to call, “specialized walking.”
What is my specialized walking?
It’s a simple way to get outdoors, get your body moving, and burn body fat. It’ll get your metabolism revving, and have you feeling terrific.
How did specialized walking take shape?
I started going to the gym, as soon as I graduated from high school. I was at an all time high with my weight. I spent many years since, training in the gym. I had great moments there. I was able to reach my peak fitness at one point by going 5-6 times a week. I got into running too, and I finally felt like the athlete I always was. It wasn’t about improving my athletic skill though, I looked like an athlete now. I believed in myself. I was letting go of a lot of embarrassment. But, I eventually came to the conclusion that I loved the outdoors, more than I loved being in the gym. I love being surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. I love the peace that I feel from it. I didn’t enjoy being around people in the gym, or waiting for equipment to be free. I wanted to do my own thing, and not be disturbed. I didn’t want to be confined anymore by the whole gym atmosphere. But, how could I maintain my fitness, without a gym? I’m not at that peak fitness I once had, but that’s because I’m not competing in anything. I’m not running races right now, and I’m very happy with my fitness level as is. I’ve been able to stay fit and keep the weight off, by rarely going to the gym. Thankfully, this has been the case. I reached a day, I knew I’d never go back to working out in the gym. I needed a new plan, and I turned to walking.
How do I use it?
Whether you decide to walk outdoors or on a treadmill, is totally up to you. I’ve been walking outdoors year round now, over the last few years. I go out in rain and snow storms, and the weather needs to be pretty bad to stop me. You must absolutely use caution! Always check the weather ahead of time, and if there are warnings, ice, etc., stay home. You must also think of safety factors. Think about the safety of where you live and if there are walk ways. You should never walk in traffic. I’ve mapped out my own trail, and it’s been safe. You also need to consider the time you’ll be able to walk. I’ve found, that specialized walking, is the most beneficial by doing it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I head out the door every single weekday morning, at 6am sharp(I go a bit later on weekends). You need to consider, whether 6am, is the safe thing to do where you live. You can go a bit later, or you can organize an early morning walking group. By rolling out of bed, and going for a 40 minute walk(at a normal pace), its done wonders for my body, weight, my emotional well-being, and health.
Taking a 40 minute, early morning, empty stomach walk, is something I do just about 365 days of the year. This has been my preference. If I’m traveling and at a hotel with a gym, I may run on the treadmill, do intervals instead, and most likely mix in other cardio equipment to change things up. Sometimes I have other activities planned, so I won’t walk, in order to save up some energy. So, if I’m going hiking or kayaking for a couple of hours, I’ll skip it, and I’ll also have a light breakfast. Other than those times, I’ve made my early morning walks a top priority. Anything else can wait, because I know, there’s no better way to get my day started.
If you have a treadmill or other piece of cardio equipment at home, or if you’re able to get out and walk safely, start tomorrow morning. Specialized walking will be the best thing you take on. You may not think it would, but it has changed my life. If you need to start out with less time, it’s ok, but work your way up to 40 minutes daily. This is, the best and most important first step, you could take towards weight loss. In time, you’ll see its value, and you’ll look forward to it each morning, as much as I do.
