Warner Brothers will be going toe to toe with Marvel Studios in the superhero movie war. Warner Brothers has the rights to produce a number of rival DC Comics characters. There is some speculation that the studio is trying to mimic the Marvel method and release multiple new movies.
Warner Brothers Studios has just released an ambitious schedule for film development based on DC Comics superheroes. These new movies are part of a larger plan that will help catapult Warner Brothers into some serious competition with the already popular Marvel movie empire. Warner Brothers will be producing iconic characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.
Starting in May 2016, Warner Brothers is going to be producing seven new movies. These movies will be focused on characters that will appear in the Justice League and some characters that many may not be familiar with.
Batman vs Superman – May 2016
The first new film is the sequel to the popular Man of Steel released in the Sumer of 2013. The latest addition to the DC franchise is leading toward the creation of the Justice League. The goal seems to be to create some competition for Marvel’s Avengers. The movie is slated to be released on the same day as the next installment of Captain America. The head to head faceoff between Marvel and DC has been coming for some time but with the crucial nature of opening weekend box office, one of the studios is likely to move their respected movie to another date.
Shazam – July 2016
The DC classic character Captain Marvel is making a comeback. The superhero taps into a variety of powers through saying the word Shazam and transforms into Captain Marvel. Shazam is an acrostic for a variety of abilities. S is for the wisdom of Solomon. H is for the strength of Hercules. A is for the stamina of Atlas. Z is for the power of Zeus. A is for the courage of Achilles and M is for the speed of Mercury. Rumors have Dwayne Johnson interested in the role but nothing is confirmed at this point.
Sandman – Christmas 2016
The Sandman has the ability to have future vision in his dreams and then works to prevent disasters from happening. He carries his gas gun that renders those in the vicinity unconscious. The Sandman is a Golden Age of comics character from the 1950’s.
Justice League – May 2017
The Justice League is a combination of various heroes that will make cameos in other DC films. The Justice League has confirmed Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and possible Cyborg. The film is intended to be the rival to the Avengers.
Wonder Woman – July 2017
Following the Justice League will be a series of solo character movies. The first will be Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot as the Amazon superhero. Marvel has yet to produce a movie with a female lead character. There are rumors of another Marvel project in this time frame, perhaps Ms. Marvel.
Flash and Green Lantern Movie – Christmas 2017
The Flash will co-star with the Green Lantern in this solo feature. There seems to be little information about this movie or the casting. It may be that these two will also make a cameo in Batman vs Superman.
Man of Steel 2 – May 2018
The second Superman movie will release and start setting the stage for more movie mayhem for another cycle of movies. It would seem that Warner Brothers may be trying to duplicate the Marvel movie model.
The schedule for Warner is going to be intense to get all of these superhero projects together but there is a market for the superhero genre like never before. Will Warner Brothers be able to generate a significant challenge to Marvel with these new movies? The answer is yet to be seen but for superhero movie fans this is a win-win situation.
