Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara sat down for an interview with the New York Times and one of the things he talked about was the DC Comics franchise of movies. Warner Bros. has been trying to get DC Comics off the ground in recent years, at one time hoping it would cover for their loss of the Harry Potter franchise. While “Green Lantern” failed, “Man of Steel” was successful enough to warrant a sequel.
With “Batman vs. Superman” coming in 2016, the question is what will happen next for DC Comics partnership with Warner Bros. movie division. According to Tsujihara, there will be a new DC Comics movie series that will be starting soon. Here is a look at what might be coming for DC Comics through Warner Bros. Entertainment.
“Batman vs. Superman”
It will all continue in 2016 when Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman from “Man of Steel” to team with Ben Affleck’s Batman in the long anticipated “Batman vs. Superman.” This movie was expected to be the start of an introduction to the Justice League, a team that includes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash and more. With the movie pushed back from its original 2015 release date, what fans will see is still unknown outside of the fact that Jesse Eisenberg will play the bad guy in the movie, Lex Luthor.
“Wonder Woman”
Of course, the one thing that is known is that there will be a Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot has not only signed on to play Wonder Woman in the “Batman vs. Superman” movie but has a multi-picture deal in place and Gadot said that one of the movies she signed on for is a “Wonder Woman” solo movie.
“Justice League”
This all should lead to a “Justice League” movie. Originally, the thought was that “Batman vs. Superman” would lead to the “Justice League” movie, much like the solo Marvel movies led into “The Avengers.” If the idea that Tsujihara suggested is of an actual connected DC Comics movie series, it is almost common sense to see them play out the Justice League idea, because that could then spin-off into solo movies of the various characters, including “Wonder Woman,” “Flash” and “Green Lantern.”
Television
The problem here is that “Flash” is coming to television on the CW as a spin-off from the popular show “Arrow,” which is based on The Green Arrow, another member of the Justice League on occasion. The question here is whether or not the Warner Bros. movie universe will live in the same world as the television universe, like Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” or if the two will live separately.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Then there is the news that came out a few months back that said Warner Bros. wanted to make a batch of smaller priced DC Comics based movies as well to go alongside the blockbusters. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has announced that he has agreed to play a DC Comics character but has not said which one. When asked if it could possible be the John Stewart version of The Green Lantern, Johnson said the character of Green Lantern has already been done although Lantern and Black Adam are his favorite DC superheroes. While Black Adam is not technically a hero, The Rock has been rumored to play him for a long time. The idea now is that Johnson could play Black Adam or maybe the alien bounty hunter Lobo.
