Walt Disney Home Entertainment pulls another classic out of the vault and delivers it in a brand new high-definition package. “The Jungle Book” is the latest jewel in the crown of the Mouse House to hit Blu-ray in a Diamond Edition. The release will no doubt have Disney fans everywhere clapping their hands in glee.
Mowgli is a boy raised in the jungle since infancy by the animals. As he grows older, he journeys into the wild to discover who he is. He’s accompanied on his trip by a bear named Baloo, who helps keep him safe as he meets all sorts of friendly and malicious creatures along the way.
“The Jungle Book” Diamond Edition is presented in 1080p High Definition with an aspect ratio of 1.75:1. The picture is clear and the colors of the jungle and its creatures are vibrant and warm. There will be some complaints that the film is too clean and has lost its original cinematic flavor because of its digital upgrade. I found it to be a pleasant watch visually, however.
A 7.1 DTS-HD mix was given for “The Jungle Book” Diamond Edition. It enhances all the song numbers and atmospheric noises one would expect to hear in the jungle. The surround sound mix is something Walt Disney himself probably never imagined possible. It really beefs up the home viewing experience.
“The Jungle Book” Diamond Edition includes over two hours of bonus material. There’s behind-the-scenes featurettes like “Sparking Creativity,” “Music, Memories, Mowgli,” and I Wan’na Be Like You.” “Bear-E-Oke” Sing-Along will get the children in your household whooping and hollering in joy. Special Introductions to the movie are provided by Diane Disney Miller and Richard M. Sherman. We also get an alternate ending, “Disneypedia: Junglemania,” and more.
Lovers of all things Disney will find “The Jungle Book” Diamond Edition an absolute must-have addition to their home entertainment library. I wish I could say I appreciate this release as much as others. However, I don’t find it as charming and irresistible as some. There’s too much song and dance and not enough action for my tastes. Kids love it and that’s all that counts in the end.
“The Jungle Book” Diamond Edition is available now on Blu-ray.
