I’ve been a huge fan of Vince Young since the first time I saw him play for the University of Texas, that fanhood only grew when I learned he had been mentored by one of my all-time favorite players in the NFL, Steve McNair. (larrybrownsports) When Young was drafted by the Tennessee Titans it seemed as if he had landed in the perfect position, he would get to learn from his mentor, grow in his position, then eventually take over as the franchise quarterback once McNair decided to step away from the game, unfortunately the Titans didn’t have that idea in mind, instead releasing McNair and pressing Young into the starting role in his first season. (nashvillecitypaper) After that move, Young did alright for a year or so, but took a steep decline, eventually getting released in Tennessee, he hasn’t had any luck finding another job and keeping it since that moment. (thepigskinreport) He’s had ill-fated stretches with the Eagles and Michael Vick’s backup, the Bills where he lost out to Ryan Fitzpatrick, Green Bay where he was cut at the end of the preseason although he did look solid in his little playing time, and most recently with the Cleveland Browns where he was cut after the team drafted Johnny Manziel. It’s a shame that a player with such an incredible amount of talent can’t seem to catch a break in the league, but it did seem that he was setup for failure from the beginning, and his ego didn’t help things with the whole “dream team” comment in Philadelphia. (bleacherreport) While teams have been willing to bring Young in as a “camp arm” the last couple years, nobody has been willing to offer him a full time gig on their roster, even as a backup, seemingly decreasing the chances he gets back to the NFL a bit more each year. (profootballtalk) There’s one option on the table for players who are having trouble getting back to the league, or those who just want to keep playing even though no franchise is looking at them as an option, that would be entering the Canadian Football League in order to generate game tape and hopefully use that to develop interest from NFL teams based on their play. (espn) The problem with this is that Young has stated he will not go the CFL route, stating he has a job waiting for him at the University of Texas instead of going to Canada, he seems to see the CFL as beneath him at this point. (cbssports) Unfortunately it seems as if it may be time for Vince Young to swallow his pride, set his ego aside, and go to Canada and show he’s still got what it takes, hopefully that would land him a spot with an NFL franchise once again, even if he’s seated behind someone, it would at least open the door, something the few of us who still admit to being his fans have been waiting for years to see happen.
