While I don’t want to focus too much on the negatives about this series which there are a few, I want to look at the positives of the series. Vikings is a historical fiction series depicting the lives of a clan of Vikings and their leader Ragnar Lodbrok. Which by the way, was a real Norse hero.
Ragnar, after hearing stories about land to the west takes it upon himself even though it was the against the will of the Earl and comes back after finding land. He comes back with treasures and made several priests from a monastery into slaves. Ragnar himself took one of the priests as his own slave but treats him more of an equal than a slave.
The first season really focuses on Ragnar’s fight to the top from being a farmer to become Earl himself after ousting the Earl before him. It also focuses on him going to England a couple of times.
They do a decent job focusing on characters to drive the story onward instead of using violence and sex as a focus. It shows the struggles Ragnar and his family go through before Ragnar becomes Earl.
Vikings never really got stagnate. The story keeps moving forward at a pace that isn’t too fast but isn’t too slow that you lose attention to the story. It has a balance between action and drama. One never really outweighs the other and that also helps with the story as well as being able to stay interested.
Being that it is a cable channel show it has a decent production value. It doesn’t have a very long season. Season one only has nine episodes. It follows shows like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Spartacus: Blood and Sand. If you are a fan of British TV shows the short seasons won’t bother you at all.
Now onto the negatives. First off, and this isn’t really about the show than those that want to bash it. This is a historical fiction/drama/action show. While there is lots of inaccuracies take it for what it is worth. It is a show for entertainment. it isn’t a documentary.
My gripe about the actual show is the dialogue and the acting. Maybe it’s the script itself but the dialogue isn’t the strongest or the most conveying as well as the acting. It is strong enough to be interesting to a point. I just wish there was more dialogue. It feels like I am watching “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.” Instead of Shaolin Monks it’s Vikings.
I do recommend this show. While its not the most accurate and the acting isn’t the greatest. It does give you an idea of how they may have lived. It can give your imagination some ideas about how it was like living during that time.
I would say at least give it a shot. No harm on checking out the first episode or two especially if you are into period pieces or historical fiction like this. You may be surprised. Just remember this isn’t a documentary. This is a show for entertainment nothing more nothing less.
