When people think of Memphis, they think of three things: Elvis, rock and roll, and barbecue ribs. And while those two things are certainly represented in this city, what people don’t know is that there is a large vegan and vegetarian population.
Surprisingly, there are great vegetarian and even vegan options at almost every restaurant you go to (BBQ Tofu Burrito at R.P. Tracks!). But where do you go if you don’t want to scan the menu obsessively or send something back because they put cheese on it? Where do you go for refreshing juices and kale chips in the city of rock and roll and meat?
I have three delicious and exclusively vegan suggestions:
1. Imagine Vegan Cafe
Located in the trendy Cooper-Young neighborhood, Imagine serves up mouth-watering and vegan-friendly comfort food favorites like potato skins complete with “cheddar” and “sour cream” and The Messy Dog, an amazing vegan chili dog. Their menu is extensive, and most of it is the vegan version of something you used to eat as a kid and still crave.
Where: 2299 Young Ave
When: 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Thurs-Sat, and 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Sun-Wed
Contact: (901) 654-3455
Fun: They have vegan beers for great prices and a bakery!
2. Cosmic Coconut
This adorably decorated spot is not only a restaurant but a juice and smoothie bar that is supported by Project Green Fork, which helps restaurants in Memphis with sustainability. Menu favorites of mine are the Cosmic Quinoa Burger, which has avocado spread and the most refreshing juice of all time, the “Regenerator.”
Where: 5101 Sanderlin Ave, Suite 104b
When: Mon-Sat 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Contact: (901) 729-7687
Fun: Wheatgrass shots
3. Love Shack
Conveniently located on Walnut Grove, this juice bar has so many options. It looks just like a shack on the outside, but on the inside it looks mouth watering with fruit and veggies as far as the eye can see! Menu favorites include their kale chips, and, I’m not kidding, every juice that I’ve tried!
Where: 2886 Walnut Grove Road
When: Mon-Sat 6:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Contact: (901) 323-2288
Website: Sadly, they don’t have a website. But you can check them out on Yelp! http://www.yelp.com/biz/love-shack-memphis
Fun: The v in “love” is a carrot!
So, visit Memphis! There will be plenty of delicious things to eat!
