It’s true. Social networks have come a long way, growing and evolving along with the internet itself. It’s easy for us to sit down and hop on a computer and with just a few clicks we can pretty much find what we want. At the touch of a button, the world is available to us, allowing us to do and say whatever we feel. With increasing popularity, social networks have taken control of how we go about our day to day lives. But are they all they’re cracked up to be? Are we simply wasting our time sharing links, and updating our statuses with what we’re doing during the day?
The negative aspect on using social networks are many, and with this aspect comes the many reasons why using them may not be so beneficial, such as increased laziness. Whether it involves work, household chores, homework, or simply going out for a walk, laziness has become quite an increased problem since the popularity on using social networks became so mainstream. For some, it’s become addictive, and downright problematic.
With laziness comes neglect. There have been cases where moms (and fathers) have become so wrapped up in being online, they neglect giving their families the attention they deserve. Not a good combination for a happy marriage either! You have laziness, you have neglect, and you also have distraction. These days you can’t seem to have a one on one conversation anymore without a phone being on hand, and instead, you’re having a two on one conversation instead of a one on one conversation. Doesn’t make a very popular date night, if you ask me.
Another problem would be anonymous bullying. I say anonymous because social networks are a perfect platform to bully someone without the need to show who you really are. We’re all familiar with the term “catfish”, well bullying is quite a dark side to that. It’s so easy to pretend you’re someone else before “going in the for the kill.” It can be quite disruptive to anyone’s life, and quite a harsh reality to those who constantly use social networks to meet people without being careful.
Alas, with the many cons on using social networks, there are plenty of pros to go around. Despite the unimportant reasons on using them, social networks have been used to promote small businesses. Studies show that small businesses have grown remarkably well with the use of promoting them through different platforms. It’s easy for the word to get around concerning what you’re business is about. The more people who learn about it, the more people will want to be apart of what you’re building, especially, if your business connects to their specific interests.
Another good benefit is more simple and that’s having a community of supporters, which gives you a place to rant or vent, to speak your mind about general things that interests you, or even having a support group. People go through tragedies all the time, and it has been known that online support groups do wonders when helping others get through those tragedies. Speaking as a person who benefited from an amazing chunk of support, I can safely say this is an amazing aspect on using social networks because it gives you a unique way of getting a lot of what’s bottled up inside of you out. Very good for your peace of mind.
Overall, with everything that comes to us in life, there is always going to be good and bad. It’s that epic balance that we all have to figure out, and figure out how to use. Social networks are no different. Sure there are cons to be concerned about, but there are some good pros that will remind all of us that social networks can be a great place to communicate with many people as long as we’re careful, and as long as we balance out our time to using them as opposed to getting out and enjoying everyday life. It’s all about priorities. Once you have your priorities in place, you’ll be on the right track.
