Film festivals are a great way for both professional and student filmmakers to showcase their talents to a large audience. These festivals work to promote new and established filmmakers by providing a venue for their creative work, while encouraging the general public to adopt a better understanding and appreciation for cinema culture. All three of the following film festivals on Long Island are currently accepting submissions for their upcoming 2014 film festivals, so there is still time to have your work featured at one of these events!
Stony Brook Film Festival
This upcoming July, Stony Brook University will hold the 19th Annual Stony Brook Film Festival. Since this festival does not charge a submission fee, the festival committee tends to receive a wide variety of films across the genres. While the submissions may be numerous, the festival only stages top quality films. These films range from documentaries to foreign films to everything in between. With an annual attendance of 15,000 film lovers, this is a great festival to connect with local and visiting film enthusiasts. This festival will run from July 16th-26th at Staller Center for the Arts.
Long Island Film Festival
The Long Island Film Festival is not only the first film festival on the Island, but it is also the longest running. Since 1983, this competitive film festival has staged public screenings of both established an emerging filmmakers. This festival welcomes all genres of film, and allows both domestic and international entries. For this reason, the Long Island Film Festival offers a diverse lineup of films for the public to enjoy. The dates for this event are August 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th in the Fire Island, Fisher’s Island, and Gardiner’s Island Rooms.
Hamptons International Film Festival
This October 9th-13th, the 22nd Annual Hamptons International Film Festival will take place at various venues throughout Southampton, Easthampton, Montauk, and Sag Harbor. The mission of this festival is to introduce quality independent films by international filmmakers to an American audience. The festival aims to showcase films with fresh voices and differing global perspectives as a way to educate and enlighten the audience. The Hamptons International Film Festival offers special “Founders Passes” for the event. This pass gives attendees express access to all screenings, admission to VIP events, access to all panels, and admission to special presentations. This is a great festival to attend if you’re looking to broaden your horizons, and watch some unique international films.
