The movement to remove fluoride from our drinking water in North America is gaining lots and lots of steam, and there are already plenty of reasons that it has been and should be done.
The sodium fluoride used in our water supply is an industrial fertilizer byproduct that has been linked to both cancer and a lower IQ in children (Harvard study), and it can be difficult to avoid because it’s in both our water and most toothpaste brands.
Fluoride is a cumulative toxin that more and more people are seeking to avoid, and recent research by Dr. Richard Sauerheber from the University of California in San Diego posited that sodium fluoride iscapable of harming the neurologic, cardiovascular and muscuskeletal systems of those consuming on a regular basis.
As noted in the research, adding sodium fluoride to water systems where calcium is particularly low in concentration is especially risky, since both calcium and magnesium act as buffers to the harmful effects of fluoride in the human body.
It has been noted before that calcium fluoride, the naturally-occurring form of fluoride many people consume in mountainous regions, has built-in protections against the harmful effects of fluoride, while the sodium fluoride added to public water supplies does not.
North America specifically is the largest continent where water is fluoridated, but most of Europe actually rejects this practice as do China, Japan, parts of Africa and many other developed nations and areas.

While fluoride is something that can be hard to avoid, it’s well worth taking the extra steps to protect yourself, or at least reduce exposure. As Sauerheber noted, sodium fluoride is not worth the risk, and the practice “should be discontinued” before more harm is done.
