The symptoms of yeast infection vary from person to person, depending on the area of infection and the severity of the infection. It is a fungal infection that results in physical discomfort, itching and even burning sensations. Candida albicans, specie of Candida fungus causes yeast infection. Warm, moist and dark places are most conducive for their growth and mainly infect areas such as the underarms, mouth, urinary bladder and other skin folds. Some of the common symptoms consist of severe itching, soreness, burning sensation, vaginal irritation etc.
In infants and adults, the signs and symptoms of yeast infection can be varied. In case of oral candidiasis or yeast infection of the mouth which is called thrush, the tongue, palate or other parts inside the mouth become coated with white lacy patches which are thick. They appear as whitish patches on the red base. But, the patches cannot be removed easily. A blade or cotton-tipped applicator is generally needed for removing the patches. However, cleansing might lead to bleeding as well. Another symptom of infection is that the tongue appears red even without the coating of the whitish patches. It is often painful and makes eating difficult for the person suffering from it.
The fungus generally survives on the surface of the skin, but breakage of the skin allows penetration of the yeast and leads to its overgrowth. The skin folds and diaper areas are best suited for this kind of overgrowth. These are warm and moist areas which are conducive for the growth of fungi. Red flat rashes are found on the surface. These are also characterized with sharp scalloped edges. Small patches of this kind can be found in the skin folds and diaper areas. Itching and pain is generally experienced due to the rashes.
Internal organs may be affected due to yeast infection and the symptoms can be observed in the form of dysfunction or pain of the organs. Candida esophagitis is common among AIDS patients who suffer from yeast infection of the upper gastrointestinal systems. This leads to painful ulcers which makes swallowing very difficult and painful. Vaginal yeast infection is common among women and leads to white discharges. It is accompanied with symptoms such as itching, burning and irritation. Burning sensations during urination is also a common symptom of yeast infection.
Injections using dirty syringes or breakage of the skin or mucous membrane may allow Candida direct access to the bloodstream. Symptoms of such a condition involve sickness without fever and changes in the mental and behavioral functions of the individual. However, changes in behavior occur only when the brain is affected by the fungus. But, symptoms are generally not observed at an early stage and emerge when the infection becomes severe.
