Traveling with children is never easy. You have to expect the unexpected, and surprises happen quite often. Here are some tips you can use when traveling during the Memorial weekend:
Don’t leave hungry
You are probably tired from a long week at work or from packing for the family reunion, and don’t feel like cooking breakfast before leaving on the trip. For a better trip with your children always make time for breakfast. You can stop and have breakfast at a restaurant to save time. If you don’t, ten minutes down the road your children will ask for food and it only goes downhill from there. A full stomach makes for a happy camper.
Avoid rush hour
This is extremely hard to do, especially during the Memorial weekend, when everyone is traveling. However, avoid getting stuck in traffic with your children by pulling over during lunch and supper times. If you have a long trip ahead of you, eat your meals at restaurants that have a playground. This way, you give your children a break from the long ride.
Always leave early. When traveling with children you have to stop more often, therefore you need all the time you can get. Pack the day or night before the trip to save time and get an early start. If you fly to your destination, you need to get to the airport early so that you have time to park your car and go through the security check.
Don’t let your children fill up on candy and juice
This is a big mistake when traveling with children. If they eat too much candy they will not eat their meals and be satisfied. Plus, if they drink too much juice you will have to make more restroom stops.
Purchase a DVD player for your car
A DVD player provides hours of entertainment. You can play their favorite shows and movies and before you know it, you will be at your destination. Don’t forget to pack any mobile video games your children enjoy playing.
Childproof car doors and windows
This is a safety issue, especially if you have younger children traveling with you. When they get bored, they like to mess around with opening windows and doors, kicking the back of your seat, etc. If you are not careful, before you know it, your little girl’s teddy bear goes flying out the window. Avoid this by locking the doors and windows, and never allow them to get out of their seat belts. When they get tired, pull over for a break.
Don’t take toys inside restaurants
When you make pit stops always leave toys and blankets you don’t need in the car. You don’t want to have to return to a restaurant to pick up items you left behind. Pack and travel light.
Keep wet wipes in your car
These are a must have for parents with small children. They are useful when you have to clean up and you don’t have water to do it with. Wipe sticky hands, coffee and juice spills.
Dress your children light and comfy
Whether you travel by car or plane, dress your children light and comfortable. Avoid jeans, shoes with laces, sun dresses that are not made of cotton, big hair bows, etc. If you are going to a family reunion wait to dress up you children until you get near the destination. Memorial weekend travel should be relaxing and fun. Don’t forget to pack an extra outfit for each child as you never know when or if they may need it.
Have your children sit between the adults on a plane
If you have to travel by plane during this Memorial weekend, make sure to have your children sit between or besides the parents. Don’t allow them to sit at the edge of row as they can get hit by the food cart or falling luggage. Always supervise them so that everyone can enjoy their trip.
Traveling with children can be challenging and exhausting if you are not careful. Make memories and enjoy this Memorial weekend with your family. One successful trip leads to more fun vacations each year.
