Most people think of summer as baseball, picnic or barbecue season. However, for an etiquette consultant, it can mean only one thing-Wedding Season! As the weather warms, I’m elbow deep in wedding questions, many of those from frantic brides wondering what to do about their bridesmaids’ gifts. Consequently, I’ve come up with a few perfect choices, which I’m sharing with you today. Ready, set…gift!
Oh! I forgot to mention the wedding challenge. There is a quiz question buried in this ditty. Let’s see if you can find it and know the answer.
Traditional gifts trump all!
The traditional bridesmaid’s gift is jewelry, more specifically a necklace. A necklace is a perfect, and more to the point, logical choice. After all, the bride can control the overall appearance of her wedding if she also chooses her maid’s jewelry.
Speaking of “maids”, who were the first bridesmaids and why were they necessary?
Where to find some great deals
Tophatter.com and Claire’s.com has great deals on jewelry that looks much more expensive. I’ve purchased many a gift using both of these sites.
Give your maids a makeover!
Unfortunately, it is becoming a standard for brides to expect her maids to have their makeup and hair done by a professional the day of the wedding. Typically, the bridesmaids are responsible for this cost. Making matters worse for our ladies is the necessity to meet with a professional well before the wedding for makeup and styling. This is a no brainer since everyone involved wants to get the look exactly right.
This added expense on top of the dress, shoes, gifts, bachelorette party just may be bit too much to ask. So, why not give your maids at least one of these visits as a gift.
How to find the best deal.
Many times, you may be able to work out a great deal with your own hairdresser, especially if she is also a makeup artist. Alternatively, you can also pick up great deals if you follow “deals of the day”. Local newspapers, television stations and many other similar sites offer discounts to various businesses and products. One of our local networks is offering a 43 percent discount on facials right now.
Let’s head to the spa.
With all the stress of wedding planning, the tug of war over the seating chart and the general weariness of trying to keep a smile on your face during all of it, it is time to decompress. Your maids are probably feeling your stress as well. So, perhaps the best gift of all could be a spa day for all of you. Include a bottle – or three – of bubbly and the stress will just roll off those tight neck muscles.
How to find the best deal.
I’ve found the best deals offered by those “deals of the day” sites. Our local paper offered a 55 percent discount on a spa day just this last week!
Quiz Answer: During the “marriage by capture” time-period, a groom and his friends would swoop into a neighboring town and capture the bride to be. While the groom was convincing his future love of his undying love, his friends fought off her liberators. Today, these friends are his groomsmen. The tradition is also reflected with the groom standing on the bride’s right, so to defend her with his sword. During the same time-period, the maid of honor was originally a woman in the groom’s town chosen to prepare his captured bride for the wedding ceremony.
