With summer already well under way, people are seeking the shelters of movie theatres to escape the heat. This summertime treat is known as the “Summer Blockbuster”. So, if you thought you were escaping the heat; think again. Here are six sizzling summer blockbusters that can please the fan of any genre!
6. Into the Storm PG-13 ~ 1 hr. 29 min.
August 8th, 2014
Starring: Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeremy Sumpter
Told through the eyes of extreme storm chasers, Into the Storm spans a single day where a small town is ravaged by Mother Nature. If it’s anything like what the trailers and teasers show us, we can expect that the “worst is yet to come”. Honestly, I’m not expecting much in the way of acting or storyline (though I’m always hoping for a Pacific Rim-type scenario where I’m pleasantly surprised in those departments), but there will be a storm and if you’re into action and a thrilling ride, then this film will blow your socks off!
For those interested, this movie would fall under the “found footage” category, so beware. At least that’s what it appears to be.
5. Earth to Echo PG ~ 1 hr. 31 min.
July 2nd, 2014
Starring: Brian “Astro” Bradley, Teo Halm, Reese Hartwig, Ella Wahlestedt
In the same genre as the above-mentioned movie, Earth to Echo spans one unforgettable evening with a group of friends. Filmed as a “found footage” homage of sorts to “E.T.” and “Explorers”, this movie seemingly captures feelings of nostalgia for the previously mentioned movies whilst building new memories for a new generation. It’s family friendly fun rolled into an out of this world adventure – I’m there!
4. Begin Again R ~ 1 hr. 44 min.
July 2nd, 2014
Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, Adam Levine
You wouldn’t think this would be a “summer blockbuster”, but it’s one of the rare choices for romantic comedies that fans of that genre can get during this summertime. Putting aside all of that, I am hoping that this is not chock full of cliches and that the nerdiest (but actually sorta beautiful) pick up line “I wanna make records with you” is not in vain. I want there to be music. Lots and lots of music. So, here’s to hoping for a beautiful symphony of love and music through Begin Again.
3. The Hundred-Foot Journey PG ~ Not Yet Available
August 8th, 2014
Starring: Helen Mirren, Manish Dayal, Charlotte Le Bon
This charming story, set in the south of France, is centered around the Kadam family. Displaced from India, they travel to France and decide to settle in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and open up a restaurant – The Maison Mumbai – across the street directly from a Michelin-starred French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). The trailer gives away too many bits and pieces of the story, but it still seems like a charming tale of family, friendship, and food.
2. The Expendables 3 PG-13 ~ Not Yet Available
August 15th, 2014
Starring: EVERY 90’s ACTION HERO and then when you think you can’t think of any more – THINK AGAIN, also some wrestlers for good fun, and one current heartthrob star. And Jason Statham.
This time around, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the gang (there’s too many to name in this space) come face-to-fist with the co-founder of the Expendables – Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson). Subsequently, Stonebanks became ruthless and someone who Barney was forced to kill…..or so he thought. Cue the “dun Dun DUN” music and you have yourself the beginning of this story. Wait, people don’t really pay attention to the stories in these movies? So, there’s action, and explosions, and if you’re really still reading this to see what this movie is all about then perhaps it’s not for you. Just sayin’.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy PG-13 ~ 2 hr. 2 min
August 1st, 2014
Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan
The Marvel Cinematic Universe will expand this August when we meet the Guardians of the Galaxy. Action-packed, epic, and adventurous can accurately describe this movie…and I haven’t even seen it. Cocky and irreverent, Peter Quill (Pratt) steals a mysterious orb that, of course, is coveted by the villain of this film – Ronan the Accuser (Pace). Joining up with a ragtag group of misfits: Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot helps him to evade Ronan. But as he finds out more about the mysterious orb, they stand together to defend the galaxy from the dark menace that wants to destroy it.
tldr: It’s Marvel, has superheroes, set in space, and ya know ROCKET THE RACCOON. I expect the humor to be out of this world. But I am a fangirl, so I’m a bit biased.
If you ever want to beat the heat and shrink away from the sun – at least for a couple of hours, then set sail on the summer blockbuster seas and check out these films. Check your local listings for showings of these summer hits as well as previously shown blockbusters (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Maleficent, Godzilla, Edge of Tomorrow, The Fault in Our Stars, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and many more!).
