Memorial Day is typically ushered in with a wave of sweet barbeque sauces, processed hot dogs and piles of potato chips. While this might be delicious, it doesn’t exactly fit the paleo lifestyle. Luckily, barbeque basics are a breeze to make paleo. With these Memorial Day paleo appetizers, your backyard party is sure to be a (healthy) hit!
Paleo Memorial Day Appetizer: Chicken Wings
You really can’t go wrong with paleo chicken wings at a Memorial Day barbeque. This staple is easily made paleo by omitting sugary sauces and substituting a mix of spices. Get creative with your spice mixture-add in curry, coriander, paprika and cayenne pepper for a spicy Indian-inspired take, or combine lemon juice, garlic and black pepper for a more traditional twist. No matter what spices you choose, coat your wings well and pan-fry them in some coconut oil or throw them on the grill. Your guests won’t even know they’re eating paleo!
Paleo Memorial Day Appetizer: Mini BLT’s
Mini BLT’s are fun to make and eat. To create these cute little treats, you’ll need: grape tomatoes, cooked bacon cut into one-inch squares, and one-inch squares of crunchy lettuce. Cut your grape tomatoes in half and sandwich the bacon and lettuce between the halves. Stick a toothpick through the breadless “sandwich” to hold them together and you’re all done! Whip up some spicy homemade paleo mayonnaise as a dip to add a little extra kick. Simple and fun!
Paleo Memorial Day Appetizer: Fruit Kabobs
Fruit kabobs tend to be a big hit among kids and adults alike. All you need for this paleo appetizer is a skewer and bite sized chunks of your favorite fruits. Sweet fruits like pineapple, grapes and banana pair well with melons and berries of all kinds. Simply slide your fruits on your skewer in any order you like, and you’ve got a bright and delicious paleo appetizer for even the pickiest of your Memorial Day guests. For extra indulgence, drizzle some dark chocolate over your fruit.
Paleo Memorial Day Appetizer: Deviled Eggs
Deviled eggs may be the Memorial Day appetizer standby, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be made paleo. Sub out store-bought mayonnaise for your own homemade paleo blend, and the work is practically done for you. Boil, peel and slice open your eggs to remove the solid yokes. Mix the yokes with your homemade paleo mayonnaise, some Dijon mustard and the spices of your choosing (paprika is always great in deviled eggs!). Fill the whites with your whipped up filling, and you have the perfect Memorial Day paleo staple.
Paleo Memorial Day Appetizer: Sausage-Stuffed Mushrooms
These spicy, savory bites are so good that your guests may not even make it to the main course. For this paleo Memorial Day recipe, you’ll need some high quality ground sausage (spicy Italian sausage or Mexican-style chorizo work well), chopped onion, ghee or coconut oil, and large button mushrooms. Remove your mushroom stems, leaving only the caps behind. Chop the stems and sauté them with your ghee, adding the onions when the stems have softened. Cook the onions until they become clear and add your sausage. Brown well, and scoop the mixture into the mushroom caps. Bake the stuffed mushrooms at 400⁰F for about 20 minutes.
