Scoliosis is a medical condition which affects our backbone causing it to curve from side to side. Medical professionals have admitted that they have not been able to establish the main causes of scoliosis. Probably this is the reason why there are a lot of myths about the disease. Let us have a read of some of the facts about scoliosis.
Cause.
As I stated earlier in my previous paragraph, it has not yet been established the exact cause of Scoliosis. Nevertheless, still having that in mind, sometimes our spines are forced to curve due to weakness of the bone due to poor dieting and also accidents. These two situations provide different types off scoliosis. But we must keep in mind that the major form of the medical condition, which is known as Idiopathic Scoliosis, has no known cause.
Diagnosis.
Scoliosis can affect anybody. We must always carry out regular medical check ups in order to establish the state of our bodies with respect to health. Medical practitioners will carry out x-rays in diagnosis. After obtaining the x-rays photos, they will measure the curve in the backbone. We all have curved backbones but once the curve is beyond a certain degree in angle, then the abnormality causes scoliosis. There is also a genetic factor in the disease; therefore, observation of the family tree has also been embraced as one another method of diagnosis. In serious situations, it will be easy to realize the curving of the spine with the use of our naked eyes.
Treatment.
Depending on the size of the curve, age and type; treatment will take different angles. One type of the ailment is not very serious and can be confidently rectified by observation of a proper diet that will give strength to the bones. These include meals rich in calcium and Vitamin D.
Another method of treatment includes wearing a brace around the spine to give it support and prevent it from curving or irregular growth. This method is most apt to kids who are still growing. It can not be used in mature people because their bones are not growing. Bracing helps to re-direct the curve of the spine during the process of growth and also reduce the curving during growth.
Surgery is the last form of treatment and only performed in very serious scenarios. Surgeons will perform the surgery in order to rectify the curve by joining together one or more bones.
Advisory.
To protect ourselves from the ailment. It is important to ensure that we eat a balanced diet and also avoid putting a lot of pressure on our backs.
