Over the years there have been great athletes from a wide range of different sports. Here are the top best athletes of the last decade.
1. Shaun White.
Shaun White is a fantastic snowboarder and overall a great guy. He’s now 27 years old and the last decade has proven to be a great decade for White. First starting out as a skateboarder he was the first person to both compete and win in both of the Summer and Winter X Games for two different sports. When he went to the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics he scored the gold medal for the halfpipe both years proving that he had what it takes to win. White has had his fair share of popularity through various platforms. He even has a video game series based on his snowboarding skills and has had cameos in movies, TV shows, and music. The greatest thing about him is that he’s well liked and very nice. I’ve always enjoyed his personality over the years and really loved his funny cameo in the movie Friends with Benefits.
2. Tiger Woods.
Even with all the controversy surrounding him in the last couple of years due to marital problems Tiger Woods is one the greatest golfers of all time. For people that don’t even follow golf know about Tiger Woods. I must admit I don’t really know anything about golf but I know who Tiger Woods is and how he is a really good golf player. He’s been popular for awhile and has had a very successful video game series where you can play golf as Woods.
3. Barry Bonds.
It might be kind of biased to put someone from the “local” baseball team on this list but Barry Bonds is truly one of the greatest baseball players not only for the last decade but for all time as well. He is most famous for being known as one of the greatest hitters for the San Francisco Giants. I come from Northern California and the Giants are considered to be one of the local teams so I’ve been very familiar with Bonds and his success. Having hit over 750 home runs in his career, when watching Bonds play in a game it was almost expected that he would score a home run in that game. Within the last decade he has since retired but left a legacy in the game of baseball.
4. Lance Armstrong.
Much like Tiger Woods Lance Armstrong has had his fill of controversy later in his career, but also like Woods, Armstrong brought attention to a sport that wasn’t too popular to people who were already following the sport. Armstrong is a very well-known bicyclist who has won the Tour de France seven times. Although he was later stripped from his winnings and titles because of a doping revelation Armstrong still did some good in his life. Besides bringing attention to a not-so-popular sport, he also founded his Live Strong foundation which mirrors his life when he himself was diagnosed with cancer. With this foundation he’s brought in money for research for cancer and has also provided a place where cancer survivors can go.
5. David Beckham.
David Beckham is the poster boy for soccer, also known as European football. On and off the field he has captured the eyes and hearts of many. My first introduction to Beckham was when the movie Bend IT Like Beckham came out. Being very popular in England at the time this movie brought Beckham’s name to a larger audience. He has since come to the United States to join the LA Galaxy professional soccer team bringing his popularity to its all time highest. It can also be argued that his continued popularity is due to the fact that he’s married to famous Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. I enjoy seeing his ventures into modeling along with other avenues he’s gone down as of late.
