Stress can affect you body, mind, and behavior. It can also disrupt your normal daily routines. Stress can even cause you to feel overwhelmed and anxious.
Stress can lead to more serious problems internally. It can have a serious impact on your physical and psychological health. Here are some ways stress affects your body:
Triggers Food Cravings
During stressful times, the body releases cortisol. Cortisol causes you to crave for sugars and fats. As a result, you are more likely to gain weight, especially, in your midsection. Additionally, cortisol makes it hard for your body to lose weight quickly. This can result in heart disease, diabetes, and other problems. When grocery shopping, it is best to buy healthy foods. This will help prevent you from eating unhealthy, when you’re stressed.
Weakens Immune System
Stress weakens your immune system. It makes it difficult for your immune cells to fight off microbes. As a result, you more likely to get colds and infections. Also, it takes longer than usual for you to recover. This is because stress has such a demand on the body. As a result, this negatively impacts your immune system.
Affects Mental Health
Stress causes anxiety, depression, and other problems. Stress also increases your chances of having mental health problems. Stress prevents the release of serotonin levels. Serotonin is a brain chemical that improves your mood. A change in serotonin levels leads to mental disorders. Overtime, it will affect your behavior. It can cause you to become angry, irritable, and unable to cope with simple tasks. You may also start smoking and drinking. You may even do other things you wouldn’t normally do.
Stress can physically damage your heart muscle. This is because stress hormones increase your heart rate and constrict your blood vessels. This causes the heart to work harder, which increases your blood pressure. Stress also makes the blood more sticky. This can lead to blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. Unfortunately, stress makes you less likely to survive a heart attack or stroke.
Lack Of Sleep
Stress can affect the way you sleep. It can not only disrupt your sleep, but also contribute to sleep disorders. To help you sleep, try yoga or exercising during the day. Before bed, turn off anything that will prevent you from sleeping. This includes the radio or television. Consider reading a book an hour before bed. This will help relax your mind and body.
