The Indiana Jones films had the perfect mix of action, romance, and comedy. A timeless film series, these are the top 10 moments.
10) The Propeller – Raiders of the Lost Ark
After escaping from a tomb filled with snakes, Indiana Jones finds himself on a small landing pad with an airplane’s propeller already running. He gets into a fist fight while a large Nazi right before the plane begins to circle Just as doom looks imminent for Jones, the airplane propeller sneaks up on the giant Nazi and kills him, temporarily saving our hero from danger.
9) Monkey Brains – The Temple of Doom
One of the few memorable scenes from the series without any action comes this gross-out bit from the Temple of Doom. In the palace at a dinner scene the hosts present Indiana Jones, Short Round, Willie, and other guests with an interesting meal. Most of the foods look uncooked and just like they did when they were alive. The most memorable moment comes when dessert is served, chilled monkey brains still inside a hairy chimp’s head.
8) Speedboat Chase – The Last Crusade
In his search to find the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones finds himself in a speedboat chase. The ones after him are all part of a secret society sworn to protect the location of the Holy Grail. The chase includes explosions, gunfire, and everything else a scene like this needs to be complete.
7) End Credits – The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
A movie made with no purpose, the only good part from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was when the credits came on the screen. If you have suffered through the movie you will know why this was so memorable.
6) Tied to a Chair – The Last Crusade
Indiana Jones finds himself tied to a chair along with his father as the room is set ablaze by the Nazis who are holding them captive. Comedic bickering combined with the sense of urgency helped to represent the characters perfectly in this scene.
5) The Ark of the Covenant Opens – Raiders of the Lost Ark
Another instance where Indiana Jones found himself tied to an object was during the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Nazis are ready to open up the Lost Ark of the Covenant in hopes of communicating with God. Instead they have their flesh melted off in a horrifying scene that remains one of the most memorable from the series. Jones may not have seen it, but we did.
4) Tear Your Heart Out – The Temple of Doom
Until The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out most people regarded The Temple of Doom as the worst film in the series. Even so, it had its moments like when during a scene of human sacrifice the main villain Mola Ram rips out a man’s heart.
3) The Swordsman – Raiders of the Lost Ark
Racing through the market fighting the bad guys, the crowd in front of Indiana Jones clears and out steps a master swordsman. He twirls it around to showcase his skills. We think Jones is about to engage in a long battle when he asserts his Western dominance by pulling out a gun and shooting him dead in the street. This was yet another short moment from the film series that has come to represent the dry sense of humor throughout.
2) The Rope Bridge – The Temple of Doom
Surprisingly it was The Temple of Doom that had the best final fight scene and as a kid it was one I often duplicated with action figures. Raiders of the Lost Ark ends with the opening of the Ark of the Covenant, The Last Crusade ends with the earth opening up and Nazis falling through it, and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ends with you asking for your money back. The Temple of Doom gives us an epic scene with a collapsing rope bridge with a river full of crocodiles beneath. Even leading up to this scene is a lengthy action sequence which in some ways makes up for the slow first hour of the film.
1) The Beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark
Topping the opening to the series is impossible. Indiana Jones ventures into a booby-trapped cave and is forced to, among other things, outrun a giant rolling ball. Even once he escapes he has to defy the arrows and spears of the locals as he makes his getaway by plane. This was the perfect opening to one of the best film series in history.
Autographed Hitler Book – The Last Crusade
In a brief yet memorable scene, Indiana Jones meets Adolf Hitler. Disguised as a Nazi, Jones bumps into Hitler by accident. Hitler mistakes the eldest Jones’s diary of information on the Holy Grail for an autograph book and gives Indy his John Hancock.
“No Ticket” – The Last Crusade
Another scene where Indiana Jones had to disguise himself took place on a German zeppelin. Jones dresses as one of the crew members to blend in. When a Nazi discovers him and his father Jones resorts to tossing him out the window. The rest of the passengers look at him, confused. The response he gives them, “No ticket.” The passengers immediately reach for their tickets to avoid getting the same punishment.
