Various tools can be implemented with a Tarot reading to enhance it through: adding ambience, opening chakra centers, keeping a querant from being nervous (for some it may be there first reading), to help open the psychic or intuitive channels, to create a sacred circle or make the energy positive, to cleanse the energy before and after a reading, or for additional information pertaining to the reading.
This article will discuss a few items and how they can be used in a Tarot reading. For more ideas on using tools in Tarot readings or more information on learning and studying Tarot cards check out “365 Tarot Articles” published by the author of this article. The following information is a revised and excerpted portion of what is in the complete text.
Bells: in Pagan-Wiccan practices bells are used for communication, as signals, and to cleanse an area of evil spirits. Use bells to signal the start or end of a reading, ring it while walking in a circle to cleanse the area and make it a sacred place, or ring it over a deck of cards to cleanse it of past energies.
Candles: lit candles always lend an air of ambience regardless of the event or situation. They are also good for use in divination and for cleansing an area. In Pagan-Wiccan topics different colors represent different aspects, so for a Tarot reading think about using the following colors: black for reducing negativity; blue for intuition, spiritualty, and self-control; brown for grounding; yellow for communication and concentration; purple for opening psychic channels, divination, and spiritual guidance; white for purity, cleansing and spirituality; gold for divination; and silver for psychic awareness and intuition.
Gemstones: many belief systems adhere to the theory that stones have their own properties and energies and they are used in a lot of healing therapies and in spiritual practices. They can be used to enhance the cards overall and stones regarding intuition and psychic abilities are often stored with decks. They can be set up around the space where the reading will take place to create a sacred circle just around the cards, or a practitioner can wear gemstones to enhance their abilities. Stones for calming or grounding can be held by the querant. A querant’s birthstones can also be set near the cards to add the querant’s personal energy to a reading.
Herbs, Smudge Sticks, Oils, Incense: All of these items can be used to cleanse a space, add ambience, for aromatherapy, to cleanse cards, or to enhance certain things in the querant or reader such as physic abilities, communication, intuition, or other such qualities needed in a reading. Always get permission from the querant before using any of these items as their may be allergies or smoke intolerance. The same goes for oils and never use oils to anoint a querant in case they have a topical skin allergy or negative affect. Readers can use oils to anoint themselves, the cards, candles, or the space however.
Music: music “soothes the savage beast,” as the saying goes, and is a definite mood qualifier. Choose soothing music with no lyrics such as instrumental pieces, classics (Mozart, Beethoven), or New Age pieces. Have a variety of CD’s or on a playlist and let the querant choose something they would like to listen to.
