When I book tickets for a future international trip, such as to my home country India, the cost of the tickets for a family of four can be very expensive and heavy on our pockets. Typically, each person’s ticket costs approximately $1500-$2000, so you could only imagine how much it would be for a family of four or more! I usually follow the below tips to always try and score less expensive tickets for international travel.
Book ahead of time – Whenever I plan for a trip to India, I start looking for cheaper tickets ahead of time, at least 8-12 months before. The tickets listed on airline websites at that time are generally less expensive and they tend to increase in value as you near the date of travel. If you are looking to book tickets for an international trip, say one month in advance, the chances of getting cheaper tickets are very slim. So it always helps to plan ahead of time.
Book round trip – The fares for booking a one-way trip is much more than fares for booking a round trip. So plan your vacation or trip in such a way that you know when you are traveling to and returning back, so that you can book tickets on those days as a round trip and save some bucks.
Choose days when there is no holiday rush – Tickets during the holiday rush are more expensive than tickets during non-holiday rush. So plan your trip accordingly and avoid the holiday rush and score cheaper tickets by traveling during non-holiday days.
Look out for discounts – Several competing airlines often offer travel packages with varying ticket fares, and if you are looking to book tickets via websites, do your research and check out multiple airlines and compare their prices before settling on one. Often red eye flights are much cheaper but there may be some inconvenience with the travel. Some airlines offer packages with hotel stay for layovers. So compare the prices across several airlines before purchasing your tickets. Some airlines also offer discounts for their frequent flyers, so be sure to make use of that as well.
Use travel agent – Sometimes a travel agent can help you get cheaper tickets than the ones listed on websites, especially if you are trying to book tickets closer to the date of your travel. The travel agents have several mechanisms to score cheaper fares. In our case, travel agents in India sometimes help us get tickets that are cheaper by booking from India with Indian rupees.
Whenever you plan to take an international trip, remember it always helps to plan ahead of time so that you can get cheaper tickets and also make arrangements to make your trip go smoother and without hiccups.
