Having sciatica is not a fun condition to have. It can cause extreme pain, because it is a pain that affects your sciatica nerve. Your sciatica nerve can cause pain in your legs, hips, buttocks, and lower back. Many people have to deal with sciatica every day. Here are some tips on dealing with it:
When I was pregnant with one of my children, the pregnancy brought on severe sciatica. I remember crying out in pain every time I tried to even take a single step when the sciatica was really bad. From my experience the number one thing to do is get off your feet as soon as you can. Your body usually tightens up more when you are walking around a lot so when you feel severe pain so just give your body a rest. Lying down can really help.
Cold and Hot Packs
Cold and hot packs can really help your symptoms from sciatica. You use one at a time. Usually you either use ice packs for one day or hot packs another day. Find out what works best for you. From my experience I alternated using cold and hot packs depending on what was bothering me most that day. When using packs I usually never went over 20 minutes on using them at a time. I found it best to use ice packs and heating pads on the areas that were giving me the most pain.
I was pregnant when I had sciatica so I stayed away from pain medication, but some people do use medication to help with the inflammation and the pain of having sciatica. For example, some people like to use ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and the pain. Other people like to use muscle relaxants to help with their pain. Many people find this helpful in dealing with sciatica. Ask your doctor what would be best for you.
The thing that really helped me the most with having sciatica was going to see a chiropractor. The person I saw was really nice, and he was very accommodating with the fact that I was pregnant. I did not want anything too extreme because I was worried about my pregnant belly. The chiropractor was able to lessen the pain in my body and help my muscles to not be as tight anymore. The stretching really helped, and you can also do stretching exercises to help with your sciatica too. These are some tips on dealing with sciatica from my own experience.
