Whether you are writing for an autograph, a piece of memorabilia, or just to tell them how much you adore their work, writing a letter to a celebrity is a popular hobby. No matter who you might be writing to there are a few things you should keep in mind if you want a response. These are all tips I have used when writing to professional athletes over the years.
Honesty helps a lot when writing a letter to someone you admire. Let them know why you are writing and exactly what you want in return. Sometimes you will get a form letter back and it is clear your letter went unread. However, if you remain persistent you may end up with a personalized letter back to you. These people get many letters and they can usually sniff out dishonesty immediately so stay true to yourself.
Never type a letter to a celebrity. This makes it less personal and the response you get back will more likely not be a good one, which will be no response at all. If you handwrite the letter it shows you took the time to personalize instead of just changing the name on the Word Document each time you hit print. For those with poor handwriting, take your time and do your best. They are signing something for you, handprint something for them.
Offer Something New
Many celebrities receive buckets of mail. Even the less popular ones deserve something new. The best thing you can do for them is to make your letter standout. Tell them an interesting story. When I would write to baseball players I would tell them the story about how I broke my leg playing baseball and continued the rest of the game. This was met with positive results. I even had a few write me back my own letters wishing me well in my recovery. Of course, this was used for years after my leg had already healed.
In a bucket full of plain white standard envelopes the one brightly colored one is going to be eye-catching. This does not mean your job is done. Since you have caught the celebrity’s eye your letter has something to live up to now. Your letter will standout before it has even been opened and the likelihood that the attention that it deserves increases.
A tip for life in general, be polite. Say thank you, please, and other keywords that show you are grateful for the time they took in reading your letter an responding. This is incredibly simple and will go a long way in getting a successful response.
