Throwing a graduation party can be a daunting task. You want to throw a great party for your child, keep it under budget and also have great food and fun. The idea of your baby graduating high school or college may make you want to cry or rejoice with pride…but planning the party shouldn’t bring tears to your eyes. When planning a party, your very first store should be Dollar Tree. You can’t believe the deals you can get there. Balloons I think may be the best deal in the entire place. Be sure if you are getting balloons, probably black and silver, that you order ahead of time, because they do get really busy on the weekends. You can also get your tablecloths, graduation centerpieces, and plates and silverware there.
The menu is the main point of the party, because let’s be honest…food is the party! If you are planning to have it catered it’s always nice to have hot, cooked food. Deli sandwiches are always an option, but a hot meal will probably cost you the same. The traditional cookout food is always a hit, but if you want something more classy, kabobs are the way to go. Whether it’s chicken, steak, shrimp or veggie, kabobs look good, taste good and are quick to grill. They are also great to keep warm in the oven between batches. A menu of kabobs, salad, pasta salad (or macaroni) and a fruit tray, is sure to please every palate.
Over the last few years, cupcakes have become all the rage. If you want to do something simple, yet creative, do cupcakes with vanilla frosting and make graduation hats out of upside down peanut butter cups and a chocolate square. Use tube icing of any color to create the tassel look. Now that the menu is finished, it’s time to think about the atmosphere. Creating an inviting, fun environment is key to having a successful party. If you are having a daytime party, decide what type of entertainment you will have. Whether it’s a pool party or just a lawn party, you need to have adequate shade for your guests. Aldi has great deals this season on pop up gazebo tents. If your party is an evening or nighttime party, strung lantern lights provide an ambient glow, and a real enjoyable atmosphere. Target has theirs on sale this week, but you can find them at many places like Walmart and Party City.
Lastly, since most people will come bearing a card and money for the grad, it’s nice to have either a special box or card tree to put them on/in. Pinterest has many awesome ideas about how to create a card tree. Enjoy the planning, make sure the food is fantastic and be sure to keep your grad in mind when planning everything just right for him or her. It’s all about them after all, and you want it to be a special day.
