If you’re currently remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, you may be considering using granite for your new countertops. Granite is durable and very attractive to the eyes. You see it being used more and more in houses across the country.
The first thing you need to remember is that every piece of granite is different. The piece you see in the store will be different than what arrives at your home because every piece is unique. For some people this is the main reason why they choose to use granite in the first place. Luckily, even though every piece is different, they all still look great.
Granite is a natural material that’s very durable. It can last for many years and look good the entire time as long as you take care of it properly. The few negative aspects to this material is the fact that it can crack, stain, and scratch. That’s why it’s extremely important for you to know how to clean and care for the material to make sure it always looks good as new.
When you’re shopping for granite countertops make sure you ask the supplier if they’ve been treated. Treating the material will greatly reduce the risk of scratches and stains. Treating should also be done every now and then to keep the surface in the best condition.
Granite is porous, meaning that if has not been treated it will absorb any liquids that get spilled onto it. When the liquids are absorbed it can cause stains and fading. Water, wine, and milk will definitely cause some very unsightly stains. That’s why treating the surface is very important to do.
If you do spill something on the surface, do not wipe it up. It’s best to dab it gently to absorb all of the liquid. Wiping can actually spread it and cause the stain to be larger. Once you have dabbed up all of the liquid, you can then clean the surface to make sure nothing has been left behind.
Even if the surface has been treated, if you spill anything on the countertop you should clean it up as soon as possible. The faster you clean up any spills the less chance you have of them staining the countertop. Not every single drop of liquid will cause a stain but I still recommend that you’re mindful about liquids on the surface.
When you are cleaning the countertop you should never use a hard sponge or bleach. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge work best for cleaning the surface. Make sure you also dry the surface off completely using a clean absorbent towel. You don’t want to leave any moisture behind that can soak into the granite’s surface.
You can also purchase a granite cleaning kit. They are designed specifically to be used on granite material. These kits will often also include a sealant that you can apply which will help prevent liquids from absorbing into the surface.
I seal my granite counter tops about every six months. It doesn’t take too long to seal the surface, just make sure you follow the directions on the sealant container. I always fully clean the surface and dry it completely before applying the sealer. Once I’ve applied the sealant and it has dried completely, you can buff the surface to give it a like new shine.
Granite countertops are a great addition to any home. Keeping them looking new requires a little work but it’s well worth it to keep your investment lasting for years to come. Keep the tips I mentioned in this article in mind and your granite countertops will look great for a long time.
