Living in Hawaii makes it easy to have a luau but if you are in a part of the country that is not so hospitable it may be a challenge to create a luau. Here are a few ideas to help you get cooking with ideas of your own.
Pineapples and coconuts are great foods to serve at a luau so plan on getting them and serving them. Pick out nice fresh pineapple and coconut so it feels like you are right on the island. You can prepare them into a dish or just cut them up and serve them in a bowl as they are.
Grilled chicken or pork with a honey glaze or just plain with salt are good choices for a main dish. You can grill them over a wood fire to add great smoke flavor. You can cook the meat in servings or put them on a skewer with pieces of pineapple between the meat cubes.
Seafood is another great choice to serve at a luau. A nice salmon or tuna grilled with lemon wedges on it can make a great meal. Grill a whole big fish and share it at the table or grill individual sized fish. You can also serve crab legs and oysters with your meal.
Fruit salad is a great dish to serve. Put pieces of pineapple, cherries and oranges into a bowl and mix it up. You can use many different fruits like kiwi, apricots and strawberries in your fruit salad. Take a half of a melon and scoop out the inside and use it as a bowl for your fruit salad.
Decorate your dining area with plenty of fresh flowers and have a lies for each guest. You can make up name cards and place them on plates so everyone knows where they will be seated. Place a fresh pineapple on the table surrounded by flowers and use a white tablecloth for a fresh clean look.
Serve fruit drinks with pieces of fruit in them. You can skewer the fruit with a decorative skewer and place it into the drinks you are serving. The glass you serve the drinks in can be plain glasses or you can use an empty coconut shell with an umbrella in it.
Creating a Hawaiian luau is almost as much fun as attending one. Play Hawaiian music and see who can do the best Hawaiian dance.
