Graduation, whether it be high school or college is always something to celebrate. Family and friends gather to honor the hard work and dedication the student has endured, sometimes painfully, on the road to success. Throwing a graduation party is sometimes harder than what the new graduate had to endure.
A few simple shopping and party-planning tricks can turn a ho-hum graduation party into something that increases the festivities without breaking the bank.
Decorations are extremely important to increase the excitement of the occasion as well as the atmosphere. Party supplies to fit the theme are easy to find and a customized banner is an absolutely perfect addition to round out the party. Helium-filled balloons attached with ribbon to a table weight make great centerpieces as do theme-colored carnations in a clear-glass vase. Food and drink
A graduation party is nothing without food and hors d’oevres are the perfect accompaniment. People are mingling and well-wishing so finger food is where it’s at. If there will be more than twenty guests, a catering company may be in order unless you want to spend two days cooking. Otherwise, keep your snacks simple yet elegant.
A simple but fancy hors d’oevre is placing cubes of extra sharp cheddar and specialty olives on skewers; add a slice of white onion if you dare. Another is peel-and-eat shrimp with a variety of dipping sauces. Guests will also love an antipasto platter with olives, European cheeses, Italian meats, sliced baguette drizzled in olive oil.
Whatever your food of choice, be sure to either break out your fancy serving dishes. My favorite serving dishes are the vintage glass servers that I’ve found at thrift stores. They don’t have to match, which makes the food table setting kitschy and fun…and cheap.
For drinks, keep plenty of ice on hand. A large beverage cooler filled with ice and soda or beer is easier than keeping drinks in your fridge.
Like at a birthday party, the special graduate is going to be receiving gifts. Plan to include a table near the entrance for graduation gifts. Guests bringing presents appreciate this more than one would realize. Cards containing money or other small items easily get lost in the shuffle of a party. Decorate the table with a framed photo of the graduate and include a guest book.
Graduation parties are extremely important to the graduate. They’ve worked hard for their success and recognition from friends and family affirm their accomplishment. Planning the perfect party will make you feel like a graduate as well.
