Positive thinking may seem insignificant and pointless, but it is extremely helpful when it comes to dealing with the beginning stages of anxiety. Anxiety often makes people feel hopeless and doomed; positive thinking can counter-balance these negative feelings and give you a new, positive outlook on life. When you’re in the moment of feeling anxious, thinking positive will probably seem next to impossible. Positive thinking is something that you should practice daily, even when you’re not feeling anxious. This will make it easier to do when you’re in the midst of an anxiety attack.
Therapy can be a very useful way of dealing with anxiety. Not only will a good therapist teach you techniques for decreasing your feelings of anxiety, but they will help you figure out why you feel anxious and what specific things trigger your anxiety. Knowing your triggers is important, because then you can better predict when you’re most vulnerable for an anxiety attack. Catching your anxiety early on, and using the tools that you’ll learn, can keep your anxiety from escalating into a full-blown anxiety attack.
The third thing that you may need to do in order to control your anxiety is to get on anti-anxiety medication. While there are both positive and negative aspects associated with this, as there are with any medication, generally the good that comes from it outweighs the bad. In order to get on meds, you will have to be referred to a psychiatrist by your therapist. Medication may seem extreme, but it can be a very helpful tool when it comes to dealing with anxiety.
