As a single father, I don’t get out much. Most of my time is spent busy doing something “productive.” Rarely do I have time completely for myself. And when I do end up having time for fun, it usually involves either an activity with my two sons or with my family hanging out barbequing or doing some other excuse-to-drink-some-beer activity. Rarely does it involve going out to bars.
In fact, I was so clueless about the types of bars that are out there in my own proverbial backyard that when I actually went out looking for them, I was completely taken aback. For starters, I am from a background where cantinas and strip bars rule. Second to those are the dance clubs or live music dance halls. Thirdly, there are the bars. So I rarely go to these because they don’t truly form a solid part of my cultural experience.
So I investigated dive bars in my area. This is what I found :
1) Deloreans: This is an all ’80s bar. The walls are covered with ’80s paraphernalia almost to a dizzying excess. Not enough to turn you off, though. The atmosphere is cool with its neon lights and ’80s videos playing sometimes synchronized to the music. You can dance or you can sit down to play some cool retro video games at the tables. The beer is not absurdly priced. What else could you ask for?

2) Cubby Hole: I went to this bar for a poetry reading. They are truly a hole, as in hole in the wall. I couldn’t find it at first. But once I got there, I was not impressed. However, the bar does have character. Nothing remarkable. Everything looks tacky. Old pool tables. Bar looks like it’s someone’s dank basement. They had a film crew that night filming a story that involved some martial arts moves. That was pretty cool as I drank my cheap tap beer. All in all, I really liked the place. It’s not one of those “in” places which I detest. I will definitely go back when I get a chance.

3) Skean-dhu: This is a place where you go to get tanked. That’s the primary objective. It’s “Scottish” themed. No poetry readings, no film crews, no atari games, no b.s. Just bring some good people and drink your cheap beer in peace. You can tell a lot about a place where you feel the inebriation as soon as you walk in. The best part about that, though is not the inebriation, but the fact that it does not lead to people acting like douches, just a bunch of drunk fools. The best kind of bar.
