“I just had a complete stranger recreate 10 of my Instagram photos and tag me and my friends in them, along with my original caption. What. The. Heck.”
Well, that’s one way to catch my attention.
This status showed up in my Facebook News Feed in the late morning from a friend. As someone who works with social media for a living, I immediately commented about reporting abuse and asking if it was a joke. Then I went and looked at the photos themselves, wondering just what the heck was going on.
Others were chiming in:
- “Report ’em, each photo. Enough reports, IG will notice. Not sure marking it as spam will work, but marking it as dangerous could be.”
- “You’re saying this random stranger created an account, found you somehow, and then took the time to recrate all these photos? Besides none of y’all drink Guinness so they didn’t even get the picture right”
- “Yes! That’s what happened! They even tweeted them at me. I am getting a restraining order. Ok I’m not, but I am turning this into criminal minds producers and there better be an episode based on this.”
I checked it out, still confused and sliiiiightly weirded out for my friend. Why would somebody random set up an Instagram just to re-create some photos of somebody else? To make matters weirder, they were older photos – from 2012.
Was my friend being targeted? Was it cyber bullying? I wasn’t sure. Still racking the brain for ideas on a motive, the tab with the comments was left open so I could receive updates.
Finally, it became clear as one of the folks who’d received a tweet with the photos out of nowhere figured things out.
Apparently, the guy’s Twitter name is the same as her Instagram name…but her Twitter name was two letters different. So when people would tag my friend for the name they assumed she was using on both, they’d mistakenly send it to this totally-random guy.
As payback, alllll of them began getting tweets and tagged in Instagram photos. So when they logged in the next time, suddenly, they found themselves the target of random people emulating them!
The real question: Creepy, hilarious, or something else?
Check the photos to see it all!
