As is typical for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto V is set in a fictional city made to resemble a real-world city. While no such place as Los Santos exists in our world, it is patterned off of Los Angeles, California. Just as the name “Los Angeles” means “The Angels,” “Los Santos” means “The Saints.” GTA V is the second appearance of Los Santos, as it first appeared in GTA: San Andreas. In GTA V, due to advances in technology, the city is larger and shown in more detail. It shows different cultures and lifestyles and generally gives the impression of being a real city.
GTA V is set in 2013, to match the date of its release, as the game came out in September 2013. The city is divided into four regions, North, East, South, and West, and each region is further subdivided into districts. Additionally, two incorporated cities exist within the larger city. Davis is a violent, poor area, and Del Perro is a classy, rich area. These differing areas provide a great deal of contrast, and have their own areas of interest for players to visit.
Time passes within the game universe as you play GTA V, so there is an active day/night cycle. The passage of time not only has an atmospheric effect, but also alters the world, as different people become active in the city at different times. Some missions are also tied to particular times. It takes 48 minutes of real-world time to pass a full 24 hours in the game, so players will often see multiple days and nights in a single session. While other matters of time, such as the days of the week, have never had much of an impact on the GTA series, it snowed in GTA Online on Christmas, so that players could experience a snow-covered Los Santos. Weather in general, on the other hand, is a recurring feature of the series. Rainstorms, fog, and clouds are all regular weather occurrences. GTA V added lightning bolts to its thunderstorms and also introduced the “smog” weather effect.
Now, there are ways you can mess around with the world using cheats. If you’d like to see a specific weather effect, for example, you can enter a specific combination of buttons and directional commands straight from the game to change the weather. Enter it multiple times to cycle through various types of weather until you reach the one you want. If changing the weather isn’t dramatic enough for you, why not change the world’s gravity? A simple code will lower the gravitational pull of the Earth and let you bounce through Los Santos as if you were on the moon. You can also trigger a slow motion effect, which has three different levels. Slow down the world and see how things change.
As an open world game, it’s important for GTA V to have a living, vibrant world, so there really are a ton of things you can do in Los Santos. So whether you’re exploring the city, seeing the sites, shopping, performing missions, or just trying out GTA 5 cheat codes for fun, you should be able to find plenty of things to hold your interest.
