The horror-based television show that has become one of the most talked about in years, The Walking Dead takes us into a world where zombies run amuck and our worst enemies might still be human. Before they were shooting, beheading, crushing, or doing whatever they could to kill their zombie foes, the show’s cast could be seen in these memorable roles.
The show’s main protagonist one week and antagonist the next, Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln is a complicated man. Before he was wearing the sheriff’s badge Lincoln had several roles on television shows airing primarily in England. Lincoln’s longest tenure on television before The Walking Dead included the shows This Life, Teachers, and Afterlife. His biggest role to cross the Atlantic into America came from the film Love Actually. In the film Lincoln played Mark. This character is best remembered for showing up at the Keira Knightley character’s door with a sign that reads “To Me You Are Perfect.” His role on The Walking Dead is a little less sensitive.
Sarah Wayne Callies
The wife of Rick Grimes, Lori, was played by actress Sarah Wayne Callies. Callies was a recognizable television star before hunting down zombies. Her breakthrough role was playing Dr. Sara Tancredi on the popular thriller Prison Break. Immediately after the show ended she shifted over to The Walking Dead. We can assume she will eventually find another action-packed series to be a main character on within the next two years.
Veteran actor Jeffrey DeMunn had one of the longer resumes among the cast on The Walking Dead. Prior to playing the lovable Dale, he was the District Attorney that sent Andy Dufresne to prison in The Shawshank Redemption. DeMunn was also the police captain in the 1986 horror film The Hitcher as well as the police sheriff in the 1988 remake of The Blob. In 2007 he would meet fellow cast members from the Walking Dead Laurie Holden and Melissa McBride as they were all in the film horror film The Mist based on the Stephen King novel.
When Norman Reedus stepped out of the woods with his crossbow to first appear on screen in The Walking Dead we couldn’t have imagined what a major role he would have. An already established movie star, Reedus’s character Daryl Dixon has become one of the more popular in the series. Out of all of the movies he has been in, Reedus is best known as Murphy MacManus in The Boondock Saints.
Fans of the comic were excited for the debut of Tyrese and in season three he finally arrived. Chad Coleman was perfectly cast as Tyrese. An already established actor, we first came familiar with him through his recurring role on The Wire as ex-convict Dennis “Cutty” Wise who was busy trying to get off the streets and live a clean life. Coleman has also continued to appear in a comedic role as Z on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
