Most of us probably don’t know exactly what high fructose corn syrup is, aside from the fact that it’s bad. Thank me later: High fructose corn syrup is a corn syrup that is processed in such a way that some of its inherent glucose is transformed into fructose. Because of taxes in the United States, real sugar isn’t cheap. But guess what: High fructose corn syrup is. It’s cheap, and it’s used in nearly everything we eat.
So here are some reasons why consuming high fructose corn syrup is just plain stupid:
5) It’s Death
Death in food form, that is. We haven’t always used the ingredient, but as soon as we started to include it in our diets, rates of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity skyrocketed. Its consumption is also associated with cancer, tooth decay, liver failure, dementia, and wait, do I have to go on? Seriously, we’re poisoning ourselves. We should maybe stop.
4) You’re Eating and Drinking Shadow Poisons
If the product itself weren’t bad enough, research has shown that high fructose corn syrup is contaminated with unregulated, toxic levels of mercury and other undefined, shadowy ninja substances because of certain products that are used to make it. We still don’t know everything that we’re consuming along with the ingredient.
Mercury is a neurotoxin. It interferes with the brain and nervous system. It causes memory loss, tremors, loss of vision, and reduces fertility (oh snap!). In children, it stunts development and in high doses it can even lead to mental retardation. Not something you’d probably want to consume, especially when you’re already more prone to the side effects of high fructose corn syrup. Enjoy your Death concoction. Best of luck to you and your loved ones!
3) You Don’t Know You’re Consuming It
High fructose corn syrup is commonly found in: Everything in your pantry. Well, almost everything. Seriously, just go look. Check everything, but start with your bread. If your jaw isn’t on the ground after you’re done, then I’m proud of your resilience. Would you like some more Death with your bread? No problem!
2) It Disrupts Hunger
Have you ever read the list of ingredients on a bottle of soda? You’ll definitely see a large amount of high fructose corn syrup unless you’re drinking diet, but you’ll see a lot of sodium, too. That’s interesting, isn’t it? If we’re drinking something with so much sweet Death syrup, then why would we need salt?
It’s true, salt can be used to bring out natural flavors. But not in these copious amounts. The salt reduces the sweet taste, and the high fructose corn syrup effectively eliminates the taste of the salt. Hmmmm. So what’s really going on here?
You probably know that salt makes you thirsty. It dehydrates you. What you probably don’t know is this: High fructose corn syrup disrupts your body’s ability to stop feeling hungry when it’s full. In other words, you’re more likely to eat and eat without feeling like you’ve ever had your fill. Interesting.
So you drink a soda, which has salt and dehydrates you, leaving you thirstier than when you began. The Death syrup, meanwhile, allows you to snack and snack, eat and eat. Of course you’re thirsty, so you might have more to drink. Which will….Well, that’s an interesting cycle, now isn’t it? Trust me, companies that produce these products know exactly what they’re doing. The foods and beverages we eat and drink are making us fatter, dumber, and lazier. And all the while, other people are getting rich from our ignorance.
Seriously, isn’t it time we all stop drinking that Kool-Aid?
And the number one reason to eliminate high fructose corn syrup from your diet:
1) You’re Voting
Most ingredients that pose a threat to public health are introduced into the system slowly, and so it’s difficult for us to notice a real threat during the transition. But eventually, when researchers unveil ingredients like high fructose corn syrup to be the crazy Death concoctions that they are, we realize the mistake.
And so take this to heart: Each and every time you purchase an item in the grocery store (or anyplace, really), you’re voting to keep more of it on the shelves. A lot of us are under the terribly unfortunate misconception that we have a lot of choices in what we eat simply because the shelves are full of seemingly different products, and it’s a choice to eat healthy or not. But truth be told, we don’t have any choices anymore. Every time we buy something that has high fructose corn syrup as an ingredient, we’re signifying that we’re okay with consuming it. And what does that mean? It means that more foods will be made with the ingredient in the future.
If you want to be healthy, and if you want your friends and family to be healthy, then make your vote count. Eliminate high fructose Death syrup from your diet.
