You are not one of those people who makes the mistake that merely because you are shopping at an outlet store–or even an outlet mall, that you are automatically getting a good deal. Or even that you are getting a better deal on brand name products than you might get by shopping at some non-outlet store. If you are one of those people, it is time to set you right. Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed. It’s a common mistake and not even a shopping mistake relegated to beginners. You can get a very good deal when shopping at outlet stores and outlet malls. But it’s not automatic.
Research the Price
Outlet malls have somehow transformed into tourist attractions. Large tracts of land upon which brand name company have constructed their outlet shops to be paired up with the outlet stores of even their own competitors have not just transformed into a tourist attraction, they have made shopping into a tourist event. Such a tourist event is shopping at outlet malls these days that part of the motivation for creating them is to instill in the shopper the sense that it is one of those very-few-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Which translates directly into a mode of thinking in which you equate opportunity with great deals. Which is why it is easy to get so caught up in the moment that you very often actually become willing to pay not less, but more for an item being sold at an outlet store. Just like you are willing to buy Disney merchandise inside Walt Disney World at a 20% mark-up premium precisely because you think it is special due to being sold inside Walt Disney World. Check out the prices of things you find inside outlet stores using your cell phone. It may seem as though the price is a deal because of the circumstances in which you find it. But very often it is most definitely not a deal
If you are one of those people who buys brand name clothing simply because of the name on the tag you already have more problems to deal with than being ripped off at outlet stores. But some people do have enough sense to at least only buy brand name clothing at discount prices rather than pay the obscenely overpriced cost for wearing clothing with that tag at store that is not found in an outlet mall. Even if you are smarter than those who pay upscale prices for fabric with somebody’s famous name on it, you may still be getting ripped off. Even if you are paying less at the outlet mall. Why? Because the brand name clothing you are at least smart enough to buy on the cheap may not actually be quite so brand name as you think. The fact is that a lot of those recognizable names on clothing tags are not necessarily found in that outlet store because they weren’t moving in an upscale store. Some fashion designers make entirely different lines for sale in outlet stores that are cheaper for the only reasons that make sense: they are made of lower quality stuff.
