Although, The Originals saw a rise in ratings for the season finale, it still had several weeks where viewers simply did not care to tune in and the show experienced series lows. Though the ratings are decent by the CW’s standards, the ratings The Originals was pulling in were well below that of their parent show, The Vampire Diaries. A little over a year ago, fans of The Vampire Diaries were excited for The Originals spinoff and now not only does the show suffer poor ratings, but also viewers on twitter, tumblr, and Facebook are showing their displeasure over the show and characters they once loved. So, where did it go wrong?
The Baby Plot
The Vampire Diaries established very early on in season 1 that vampires cannot procreate though they love to try. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is part vampire. The only explanation fans were ever given was that it was nature’s loophole. On top of that, viewers learned that Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) was pregnant in the back door pilot that aired in April 2013. However, Hayley did not give birth to her child until the season finale in May of 2014. Her character was pregnant for over a year in the eyes of the viewer. Then we see Klaus give the baby, Hope, to his sister Rebekah (Claire Holt) because it is not safe for the baby to stay in New Orleans. This left many viewers wondering what the point of the baby was to begin with.
Where is the Original family?
This show was sold to the viewers as being about the Original family. There have been a few flashback episodes featuring the family patriarch Mikael (Sebastian Roche), but those were rare. At season end, Klaus and Elijah (Daniel Gilles) are the only two members of the family permanently on the show. With Rebekah’s departure shortly after the mid season finale and her running off with Hope, it’s hard to believe she will return. Viewers did get a small spoiler that Esther and Finn had returned; however, many wonders how long they will be there? Not to mention, why not bring back longtime fan favorite, Kol (Nate Buzoholic)?
Will the real Klaus and Elijah please step forward?
On The Vampire Diaries, the Original family was the most feared family among the supernatural community. They ripped out hearts, snapped people’s necks, tortured, slaughtered their enemies with swords-they got things done and didn’t put up with anyone’s crap. On The Originals, it’s all about negotiations, schemes, and power plays. The characters that fans loved are gone. If fans had a penny for every time Klaus cried, they’d be rich.
Alas, every show must have couples, right? Right now, the only couple with some popularity is Hayley and Elijah, if you can get over the ick factor that Hayley is knocked up by Klaus, but wants his brother Elijah, and then you can see the pairing does have some chemistry. It is becoming painfully obvious that the writers are trying to set up a relationship between Klaus and Cami (Leah Pipes) but the pair just does not have chemistry. There have also been subtle hints that Hayley and Klaus may sometime in the future travel down a romantic path, but again, many fans are not receptive to this pairing. The only female character that Klaus had a spark with was Genevieve, however, the writers quickly killed that coupling when they rushed them together and made her crazy-and not in a good way.
How can The Originals make it to season three?
They’ve already done away with the baby, which is a good start, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Hayley’s character is still widely disliked. Not only has she never owned up to what she did on The Vampire Diaries, but also fans haven’t gotten a real back-story or character development. Klaus and Elijah need to find themselves and start showing the viewers why they were feared for so long. Also, fans fell in love with their family dynamic. There is something so alluring about their “always and forever” motto that fans want more of. It would be awesome to have more flashback episodes where we learn more about their family. Finally, fans want crossovers from The Vampire Diaries. Stefan and Caroline both have strong back-stories with Klaus that would draw in the viewers and add to the current storyline.
