Birth deficiencies in humans are obviously not pleasant, but people rarely see these characteristics in animals. My former cat, Willie, was adopted by my mother when she saw that she only had one eye, but just because she was born with a defect, the love we offered to Willie wouldn’t be any different than if she was born healthy.
I was the person who named her; I called her Willie because every time I glanced at my cat, I thought of “One Eye Willie” from the ’80s movies known as “The Goonies.” It sounds silly that a female cat has a male name, but it was just a funny, ironic joke that brought my family joy because this movie was watched numerous times when my siblings and I were growing up.
Willie didn’t behave like other cats because she wanted affection like a dog, especially from my mother. Animals have a tendency to follow and adore the person who offered them a home, and Willie preformed that exact action. She had a habit of following me around the house, but when my mother came home from work, she would become excited like a dog “waiting for a man’s best friend.”
My siblings and my father were pessimistic about owning a cat, but any animal-doesn’t matter if it is a dog or cat-has the ability to persuade an individual’s negative views about pet ownership. Once good-hearted people look into the eyes of an animal, many individuals become convinced that owning a pet is a great idea. My entire family treated Willie as part of the family. We never treated her like an outcast, as no human or animal should never be treated this way for a defect.
Why is a person afraid to love an animal? It’s because losing a pet due to death is a horrible experience, so they rather not love a pet at all instead of being hurt. When Willie died, I remember the day as if it happened yesterday, and it was a very painful experience. As human beings, every person will have to cope with death-whether it’s a pet, friend, or family member. Even though the agony of death is very painful, every individual should experience love. As a person who spent many days and many nights by myself, I know from personal experience that being alone is unhealthy, so if you have a chance to love a pet like Willie, seize the opportunity.
