The best trail to take in Yellowstone National Park is the Old Faithful Geyser Loop trail.
This trail starts at the famous geyser, Old Faithful, and goes a distance of about 6 miles but if you are not in the mood or don’t have the time for a hike that long you can make it much shorter.
The Old Faithful loop trial is an easy hike along boardwalks. It is a flat walk without many hills to climb and there is a lot to see along this trail.
Many of the parks best thermal features are found along this trail like Bee Hive Geyser and the Lion Group. Of course you will see Old Faithful on this trail and the Firehole River as the trail crosses over the top of the river.
My favorite thermal feature is the Anemone Geyser. Anemone is two holes that take turns bubbling hot water until they blow. Then after they have erupted they suck the water that they just blew out of the ground back into the ground through the hole. As it sucks the water into the earth it makes a sound much like a toilet flushing. If you stand near people that have never seen Anemone erupt they usually laugh making the experience that much better.
If you are lucky enough to be on the trail next to Bee Hive when it erupts you may get very wet as water from the eruption sometimes comes back down on the trail depending on what way the wind is blowing. It can be like a rain downpour and you can get soaked to the skin.
If you hike by Lion Group Geyser you will see four peaceful looking cones that gently steam and have small bursts of water. A bench sits in front of the Lion Group so you can sit and enjoy the view for a few minutes before you keep hiking.
The parking lot for the Old Faithful trail is very near the trail but there still is a lot of walking to get to the trail since it is a large area. You will be near gift shops and the visitor center when you are near the Old Faithful trail so when you are done taking a hike you can get a refreshment and perhaps see what the visitor center has to see.
